Show azbe be metallurgical pant of kutters butters co 1000 tb HIS extensive plant was established some three years ago in this city by charles butters of world wide metallurgical fame who was then about to retire from south africa and who aimed to establish a laboratory where he could practically demonstrate on strate the commercial treatment of oves in this country and conduct public for custom work and thing bein the case a brief description of the equipment of its various departments will undoubtedly prove interesting to the readers of the mining review the plant covers a ground area of feet and is floored with cement the main runs through the center cente of the building and connects through counter shafts with the main machines which are run by electric power in the crushing of ore two gates crushers are us used ed aa asanall ast 1 small nall one for sampling 4 za VIEW IN NORTH END OF laboratory original investigation and experiments in the I 1 treatment stand and reduction of different classes and characters of minerals and the result is cont conceded eded by all to be the establishment of the P finest and largest laboratory in america until recently the plant has been run as a t strictly private concern and for three years 1 I it was utilized in making experiments on ores H and minerals from all over this continent and i it was only recently decently thit that it W wa 48 aped opened cd to alie tilo other modern machinery such as a steam dryer magnetic separator sample grinder and spitz lutte to separate ore into sand and slimes ore scales and sampling floor and a roasting furnace with a capacity of pounds to the charge which was especially designed for mr air butters use Arr arranged anred on platforms on three levels there are forty six tanks with a capacity of from pounds to four tons each also numerous small tubs and other apparatus the agitation tanks hold as highan high an gallons 4 1 AA CENTER VIEW OF laboratory and a large one for practical work while two fried krupp of germany ball mills are in use with a capacity of pounds and four tons respectively and each are f fitted with several sets of extra screens to screen to the mesh desired A wilfley table with automatic feed is a prominent feature of f the equipment equipment and its work is admirable an air compressor furnishes air to any portion 0 of f the laboratory two muffle furnaces and outside bins with connecting chute in this department a noticeable noti cable feature of the equipment are the large cruci bles used for ausin fusing as high biall 1 as aa four assay tons to each charge and no charge less than thirty grammes is made the analytical department feet filled up as it is with spanish cedar desks hood cases shelving counters and modern apparatus would be creditable to any university and would best be appreciated by one familiar with practical chemical work in fact the whole arran arrangement crement of the plant is such as to permit of water hushing flush inu thereby removing any danger of salting 11 samples and at the same time preserving g a cleanliness clen liness seldom seen in works of such scope and dimension the laboratory is illuminated by sixty four electric lights 11 it has 11 gas cm s and steam facilities and water and sewer connections the formal opening of this laboratory and assacl assaying ng works mccu occurred on monda monday april 2nd and and was the occasion for the gathering toc together rether of many mining men metallurgists and nd engineers and numerous were the expressions pres oi is of surprise at the ma magnitude and completeness of the plant and the visitors were not lacking in words of commendation and of appreciation of the value of such i an establishment to the mining public the plant will be run under the name of charles butters co ltd E S leaver manager mr leaver was chemist and assayer at then the marion larion i nine mine and mill at mercur six or seven years ago but for several years
