Show RULES FOR BURNING COALS IN SMALL DOMESTIC HEATING PLANTS the fuels division of the american society of mechanical engineers recently issued a bulletin on rules for burn ing coal in small domestic heating plants that seems to be worthy of consideration on the part of everybody interested in securing best results and who would like at the same time to do their bit in eliminating the smoke nuisance of which every community of any size including salt lake has to contend with the rules laid down in this bulletin were prepared by professor L P breckinridge after an extensive study and research both at yale university and at the university of illinois pertaining to the economical burning of different fuels in house heating plants A copy of these rules were submitted to the mining review by the stratton cahoon company of engineers this city and they are herewith given for them the good of the order as follows preparation of equipment for any kind of coal 1 see that the grates are in good order 2 seal air leaks in ash pit and around clean out doors otherwise the dampers will not control the fire fare 3 cover steam and water pipes to prevent unnecessary radiation 4 provide suitable telean out tools for boiler flues 5 save your coal by not operating your furnace in mild weather use fireplaces gas logs kerosene heaters etc 6 prevent air leaks as far as possible iby by weather strips ano and storm windows i 7 provide for air in hot air furnaces by convenient slides in the pipes management of furnace for bituminous coal no change in grates is needed to burn bituminous coal in fur naces heretofore using anthracite except in the case of ses grates small adapted to fine sizes of anthrax anthracite I 1 te w where here the air passages are and not easily cleaned to burn high volatile coals without serious ser ious smoking may require change in equipment 1 keep heating surfaces clean 2 carry a deep fire 12 to 18 inches 3 do not let the fire burn too low 4 for quick heat fire only a small amount of coal us 5 study carefully the proper use of the three dampers DC be open w ally it will be found that a the pipe or flue damper should fire is the m when lien firing fresh coal and should be partly c closed when u fire well started b the ash pit damper should be open ope n to start updraft aft open a little during the day but shut at night c the check chieck anu and night 0 damper should be shut to start up fire open partly the day as experience shows to be necessary through anth i nth the 6 when fresh coal is fired admit air over the fire anro the slide glide close ul slide in the fire door until smoking ceases and then use sq the 7 do not open the fire door to check the fire ie learn al rn to io above the g dampers to control the rate of burning all air admitted a heating ing fire in excess of that needed for combustion simply cools the me surfaces surl aass ds which furnish the heat for the house 11 tor for the hii g night 8 when firing coal for a long run or banking of fresh coal wish push the live coals back or to the side and put a lot 10 ion long time into the hole thus made it will burn slowly lind and keep a should te be
