Show how the park utah mines enterprise was developed into a bonanza for the beneat of those who have wondered how and why it has been that the park utah mining company was able to land such a magnificent mining tl property as it now is operating right in the shadow of the older bonanza mines of the park city district the following from the pen of paul H hunt general manager Z of the mines will prove in interesting berestin b the sketch is historical and reminiscent and was prepared for a committee of the recent wasatch county homecoming home coming 6 celebration held at heber city a few miles below the park utah mines on the provo river what is thought n to be the first discovery of ore in the park city district was made in 1870 in about abbat the middle portion of what is now known as McHenr 3 canyon this thi S discovery consisted of an all outcrop ping of high grade silver ore carrying some lead zinc and copper lying on oil a hard quartzite later and further to the eastward of found and explored in an all adit more bior e of tile the same type ore was now caved the portal of which is about feet southeast of th the e hawkeye shaft tile the discovery lis covery of this ore attracted other prospectors which led to the ontario discovery about a year later and from that to the discovery of all tile the other great mines of tile the district which to date have added somewhere between two hundred and two hundred and fifty million dollars to the wealth of the state and nation the record of tile the exploration of the ore found in mchenry canyon is a record of tile the courage of the pioneers in in the face of almost insurmountable difficulties the ore was high grade but it occurred in a great fault zone which had shattered and broken the continuity of tile the vein so that only streaks and bunches were left this fault zone was a channel for large flows of water which developed great pressure as depth was reached the mines were situated in a narrow canyon subject to snow slides in winter and freshets fresh ets in the spring fuel for the boiler consisted of timber cut from the mountain sides or coal hauled from coalville Co alville by ox jox teams in spite of all these difficulties several attempts were made from the time of its discovery until 1901 to explore and put upon a profitable basis some of these discoveries meanwhile the ontario daly anchor judge daly west and silver king mines mines had been finding great ore bodies beginning with the easter easternmost most the ontario and developing westward it was small wonder that the earliest discoveries in the eastern part of the district with their attendant failures and the success that had been gained to the westward should not have impressed mining investors one person however who had long been identified with park city mining mr george W lambourne was undismayed and had long been working to amalgamate groups or claims that would cover what he believed was the continuance of the park city ore zone another successful park city mining man mr george D blood had long considered the great frog valley which lies partly in in summit and partly in wasatch counties was a promising area for exploration these two gentlemen combined their forces in 1916 and in 1917 work was begun through the lower ontario daly drain tunnel the work consisted of a crosscut cross cut southward to explore tile the hawkeye mchenry fissure system and a drift northward in the frog valley f fault ault zone the north crosscut has never been continuously advanced but work in the hawkeye mchenry country was so encouraging that all efforts have been concentrated there numerous mineral bearing veins have been found two of which have yielded substantial quantities of i profitable ore to january 1 1924 tons of ore had bee been n shipped carrying about four and one half million ounces of silver and ten thousand ounces of gold As a result stockholders have received about one and a half million dollars in dividends on an investment of one million dollars collars large bodies of profitable milling ore have been left and the management feels that less than one tenth of the territory in the mc henry hawkeye area has been prospected the I 1 he community that is slowly growing up about the mine is not an alien blot on the county map given over to bootleg bootlegging ding gambling fighting ahting and engaged in a dangerous unhygienic occupation but is a decent orderly and healthful community among the best of such stich that can call be found in the state W 1 I snyder corrects the hunt story when W 1 I snyder vice president of the tintic gintic stanard dard company ran across mr hunts recital as it appeared in in the park city record he decided to add something to the early day history of the famous old camp and incidentally inci P correct some of the statements recorded by hunt and thus round out a story of deep interest mr snyder wrote the record as follows the first discovery of mineral in the park city district was the green arcen monster a little bunch of copper standing up on top of the hill which afterwards formed a part of the pinyon and later the crescent and now tile the silver king coalition that little bunch of copper ore is there still and can be seen that discovery was made by ephraim hanks and louis simmons and was located under tile the law of 66 with fourteen locators among whom were george G snyder afterwards a pioneer of park city H S alexander PI W brizzee and I 1 think one of the hickmans hickmann Hick mans and sufficient others to make up tip the number later by some of the same parties and others thel pinyon was located and sold to john martin of omaha james lowe land attorney of salt lake and joshua R nichols later well known to park city district in connection with the cres crescent ent three hundred tons afore of ore from this mine was shipped to the omaha smelting smelling Sm elting and refining co in tile the fall and winter of 1871 two other locations were made that year called the walker and webster further up the ridge and south of the pinyon these last named claims were patented and as above stated the pinyon covered the green monster in the seasons of 70 and 71 there was much activity in hhaynes canyon on both betl sides of the canyon in the way of prospecting reaching clear along to scott hill the iron horse pioneer and a claim called tile the badger which afterwards became part of the california on oil the west side of hhaynes canyon and many other locations that never amounted to anything were located as early as 1871 in 1872 james mchenry with whom I 1 was well acquainted decided to prospect the east end of the district and there located the mchenry mci aenry mine in the early days of june of that year the locators were james mchenry J A hughes afterwards well known in park city and a third man with whom I 1 was well acquainted but whose name I 1 can not now recall I 1 think mr hunt is in error in supposing that it was located upon any showing of bf zinc or lead mr mchenry showed me a piece of ore which he said was horn silver and I 1 know it created a terrific excitement the ore in small bunches assayed as high as ounces which meant over in those days several parties had short term options on oil the mchenry P and it was finally sold to sam ten eycke and associates who were represented by H T templeton for several months in 1874 the mchenry company headed by mr templeton built the mchenry mill on what is now the north end of rossie hill in park city some four hundred tons of quartz and quartzite containing small particles of ore were taken down to the mill and worked but tile the only production of any worth was a bar of bullion worth less than 1000 so the mine shut down and was never worked again until the park Utah got hold of it except as different prospectors and prospecting companies worked it at times or prospected it one of these was the dutch C co 0 headed by avie pinedo but no ore of valued value was uncovered the hawkeye Hav keye was located by hughes years later and considerable work was done on it without producing anything tile the mchenry excitement resulted in in a little town being established for while called mchenry city and on lake flat which was a attracted many prospectors to that section of the district flat lake on oil the of july 1872 herman bradden was leaving he sat down to rest on a disgusted by way of ontario gulch jutting of quartz and becoming attracted by colored rock examined ontario he located it which became tile the it and thus discovered ore putting in two associates whose names I 1 do not recall but which the record has published many times on tile the of july james harrington located the parleys parley s park 1872 which adjoined the ontario on the east this was in the year also all the history of tile the ontario including the purchase t thereof hereof by hearst haggin and tevis has been published in the record many times and doubtless you are quite familiar with it for taking so much space ze but bui fis as matters I 1 hope you will pardon me ers of history you will want them to be right and so w will ill others interested |
