Show OUTPUT OF MINES IN IDAHO IN 1923 INCREASE NEARLY 50 PER CENT OVER 1922 the value of the gold silver copper lead and zinc produced from ore mined in idaho in 1923 according to a statement issued by the department of the interior based on an estimate by C N gerry of the geological survey survey was about compared with in 1922 2 there was a marked improvement in the general conditions of mining and marketing ores and metals and a decided increase in the production of gold silver lead and zinc much gold obtained by dredges the mine output of gold was valued at as compared with in 1922 A large increase in gold from placers resulted from the continuous operations of dredges at murray and featherville Fea but the output from the gold hill iowa mine formerly the largest producer of gold in the state was much less than in 1922 the largest producers of gold in 1923 were the yukon gold co at murray the south park dredging co at featherville Fea the gold hill iowa at quartzburg Quartz burg the talache mine in bonner county and the idaho metals co operating its copper property near mackay the merry blue independence buchana unity and american eagle mines also contributed tri buted to the gold output of the state more silver mined the output of silver increased from ounces in 1922 to about ounces in 1923 the value however was about the same as in 1922 as a result of the lower price of silver after the expiration of the pittman act the hercules and tamarack custer properties were again active producers from silver lead concentrate shipped to east helena mont but the output of the hecla mine was greatly reduced by a disastrous fire that destroyed the surface plant in july in the coeur dalene district which produced about ounces of silver ov or 78 per cent of the total for the state the largest producers were the bunker hill sullivan morning hercules hecla tamarack custer gold hunter success callahan and caledonia mines in other districts of the state the talache independence pen dence and idaho continental mines supplied much silver increase in copper the output of copper increased from pounds in 1922 to pounds in 1923 and the value increased from to the idaho metals co at mackay was the largest producer of copper from first class ore shipped to garfield utah in lemhi leahi county copper concentrate shipped from the harmony and pope shenon mines increased materially and copper was also contained in concentrates shipped from the talache and anines jn min ines es large gain in lead the output of lead increased from pounds in 1922 to pounds in 1923 the value increased from to a larger proportionate gain owing partly to the increase in the price of lead which averaged about cents in 1923 the lead output of the bunker hill mine was far more than that of any other mine in the state it was followed by the morning hercules hecla tamarack custer callahan success idaho continental pittsburgh idaho gold go ld hunter hayes independence latest out and mace mines mines ea each ch of which produced more than pounds other othe app prominent anent producers were the frisco caledonia sierra nevada western union talache marsh gilmore and white knob mines the coeur dalene district alone produced about pounds Smelt ipg illg of lead ore was continuous at bradley idaho but the output of the past six months was reduced as a result of the fire at the hecla mine A large 6 part of the lead ore or e was smelted smelter at east helena mont vallejo calif and salt lake city utah zinc increases more than per cent the recoverable zinc in the ore mined increased from froin pounds in 1922 to pounds in 1923 and the value increased from to the callahan zinc lead co produced both lead concentrate and zinc concentrate from january to october when its shipments ceased the zinc concentrate contained more than pounds of zinc gross considerable zinc concentrate was also shipped from the morning and success mines most of the zinc material was smelted smelter at eastern plants but late in the year the anaconda copper mining co gave encouragement to operators 0 pera tors of zinc mines of shoshone county by bidding for zinc ore for the electrolytic plant at great falls dividends amounting to were paid by the bunker hill hercules hecla federal and tamarack custer mining companies |
