Show R C GEMMEL DIES SUDDENLY on the instant after having taken a train headed west from hurley N am M robert C gemmel assistant managing director of the utah copper company suddenly expired from an attack of heart trouble he had left salt I lake ake about the middle of the month for a trip of inspection to chino copper and ray consolidated properties and following which he was going to join mrs gemmel at san diego the message conveying the news of mr bemmels Gem mels death came as a great surprise and shock to his world of friends and business associates in salt lake because there was nothing to indicate but that he was in splendid health when he left here mr gemmel was a mining and civil engineer of outstanding ability and trustworthiness and his sterlin sterling traits of character and sunny disposition made him beloved by every one of the army of associates in the official households of utah copper ray chino and nevada consolidated with which lie he had been intimately identified for many years to them his loss is irreparable as it also is to this city state and the mining states of the west Z W P robert C gemmel As assistant managing director of utah copper since the summer of 1919 mr gemmel was the right hand man of managing director directo D C jackling and of course he helped materially in handling the affairs of all the big b undertakings der takings that had previously weighed heavily on mr Jac klings shoulders since being relieved of the I 1 general of utah copper by mr L S cates several months ago mr gemmel had been almost constantly traveling from one to the other of the so called jackling enterprises terp rises so that his friends in salt lake had seen but little of him in his natural haunts mr gemmel was born at port matilda pa july 5 1863 the son of robert brown and anna eliza campbell gemmell Gern mell his technical education was received in the university of michigan from which he received his bachelors degree in 1884 pie he received his degree of civil engineer it in 1895 and in 1913 he was awarded a degree of master of engineering mr gemmell was engineer on surveys and construction for the atchison topeka and santa fe railroad company from 1884 to 1890 for the next six years he followed civil and mining engineering in utah nevada idaho and california from 1896 to 1901 he was engineer of the de lamar mines in 1901 he became manager of the mexican mining syndicate of mexico which position he held until 1903 when he was appointed superintendent of mines for the guggenheim exploration company in mexico he retained this position till 1905 and in 1906 he was appointed general superintendent of the utah copper company in 1909 he was appointed general manager of that company succeeding mr jackling and soon after he became the assistant managing z director of the jackling properties which include the utah uta h copper company the nevada consolidated copper company the chino copper company and the ray consolidated copper company pie he was also general manager of the bingham garfield railroad company on oct 17 1888 mr gemmell married miss belle E anderson they made their home at east south temple street in politics mr gemmell was republican he served two years as state engineer of utah from 1899 to 1901 mr gemmell had membership in the american society of civil engineers the american institute of mining engineers and the mining and metallurgical society of america he was a member of the alta club the bonneville club the university club the salt lake rotary club the chamber of commerce of salt lake and the salt lake country club the bear river duck club of O ogden oden den the flat rock club of idaho and the sequoyah country club of oakland he was also a member of the sons of the american revolution |
