W Merrill and W D Hendricks that contracted the grad grad- ing and construction of the Utah and ant Northern railroad from Franklin Idaho to Butte Montana This same sam spirit seems to have been milk as a food With mills to grind their wheat factories to make sugar of their beets condense their milk and can their peas all located right among the fertile deep soil farms the people I here principal III merchants while the Mason Lumber Co furnishes the hardware and build build- building building building ing material The State Bank of Rich Rich- Richmond Richmond Richmond mond looks after the financial needs of this district While beets peas and milk are the principal pursuits dairying and dairy livestock is the leadin leading industry here For over thirty years ears Richmond has held the distinction distinction distinction tion of being the dairy center of Cache county the leading dairy county of the state Her Tenth Black and White day held May 1st 1925 was very tangible evidence that she can still consistently claim that distinction distinction distinction tion Back in 1903 when a location for a condensed milk factory was being sought for the mountain inter and western states it was the volume of milk centered at nt Richmond that attracted those interested in establishing establishing lishin lishing a milk plant It was the num num- number num- num number number ber of large milk producers in this district partin that played an important part I partI in getting the condenser established The daily volume of milk produced I at Richmond and vicinity early secretary tory tary and manager and C Er E Merrill l factory superintendent The factory factor was built equipped and made its first days day's run March larch 15 1904 1 Like Lik 1 all new industries estment the constant great hazard connected with the operation of the business resulted in the original stock stockholders stockholders holders selling seIling their interests a few years ago and the near 1500 cases They employ from 75 to people an and have done their part toward making Cache valley vaHey a million and a half dairy county Today roday some of the largest and finest dairy herds in the entire moun- moun mountain tain tarn states are arc owned by dairymen of Richmond It was largely through the energy pluck and enthusiasm of Richmond dairymen the Nelson Broth Broth- Brothers Brothers Brothers ers that the Blacks and Whites were introduced on the exhibition grounds of our State fair It was then that they were jokingly told by the beef men who for years ears had practically monopolized the livestock exhibits at atthe atthe atthe the State fair to take their Mag lag pies back home It is different to- to today today to today day The Magpies now occupy first place on the grounds and in the show v ring at county and state fairs With one or two exceptions the dairymen of Richmond have centered on the Friesian Holstein Friesian breed They are arc making a study of this breed and arid as asa asa asa a result there are two exceptionally bred well bred sires owned here and some of the daughters and granddaughters of the best sires of the breed as well as granddaughters some daughters and of famous dams of the breed It will be a matter of but a few years until these Richmond breeders can furnish sires and heifers with withas as good breeding and pedigrees rees as can be had anywhere in the United States Nelson Bros were the real pioneers fifteen years ears ago when they brought to the state some of the best cows ever imported The progeny of these cows and that of the now fatuous famous the are I among best cows of f the county Two years ago N K Nelson interested a few neighbors who formed a c m- m pany and sent Mr Nelson east where he purchased Marathon Bess Burke from the world famous herd of John Erickson and Sons This sire is one of the best type and production production- bred bulls in America today Erick Erick- Erickson Erickson son himself with
