Show UTAH SULPHUR BEGINS production on monday the dinst the first unit of the plant of the utah sulphur corporation at morrissey beaver county utah went into commission the start being witnessed by officers of the company stockholders and invited guests among the number being casper R J kittredge H hunkeler and frank hardinge of chicago frank J of hammond indiana geo E hemphill and C W peterson of salt lake prof william peterson of logan utah and A ward of provo utah in describing the workings of the plant to his guests president and general manager a er M P morrissey explained that the sulphur ore was mined by steam shovels and transported in cars drawn by an electric locomotive to the mill building which is four floors in height the story below contains the compressor tanks then in the story below the tanks are the giant retorts five of them two of which are now fully installed each retort being 9 by 42 feet and holding five tons of sulphur it requires but one hour to charge the retort and discharge the sulphur after it has undergone treatment by the steam process the product of the retorts goes to the bottom story where it is transformed to any character of sulphur desired crude ground rolled or pulverized it is stated that the average of the ore as it is taken from the mine is 37 per cent sulphur and as the product leaves the retorts it is better than 98 per cent pure |
