Show TAXING THE MINES it is hardly believable that the people of utah will vote for the adoption of tile the proposed amendment to the constitution relative to the taxing of mines I 1 this amendment proposes to take away from our legislative 7 body the right to regulate taxation and give this power to tile the board of equalization this board being pointed by the governor and being under ap his domination and it is not difficult to 0 conjecture what a few men thus empowered might do to the injury of the mining indu ind try if too inexperienced to know and realize the fact that this industry is the real sinews of our commercial and industrial life the mining industry of utah is asking no favors when it comes to taxation and is now doing even more than its share in furnishing revenue for the support of our institutions but it does protest against unjust legislation against the infliction of taxation greater and more oppressive than that which is levied against other industries and it most vehemently protests against tile the placing of the power of taxation of mining property in the hands of a few men who are at the beck and call of the governor the very fact that mining alone is being discriminated against by the terms of this proposed amendment has a sinister aspect and would make it appear that the intent was to sacrifice mining to the interests of other lines of endeavor but the fact must not be lost sight of that if the industry is crippled by shortsighted short sighted arid and foolish legislation the majority of our mines will he be obliged to close down in which event other industries will be compelled to ahsu assume nie the burden which has been shared with them by the mining industry and the several classes that would supposedly be beneficiaries fici aries by the adoption of the amendment would find fina that they must make up the deficit then again millions intended for investment in mines and P prospects would be diverted elsewhere ar and id be lost to our state for no man w with i th money would think of investing in a country where vile tbt power of taxation was taken from the ie of 0 lature and vested in a board ca composed I 1 appointive men whose vision rarely ever es them thenis seive elves payroll for tends beyond the and officeholders office holders nian man or j we hope that every fair minded fra woman who holds tile the elective 0 ot f this adopt adoption Oll will vote against the amendment it makes no diff difference arence w I for I 1 1 not they are interested in mining or and are all working for the con common lillon good goo that that tha welfare of our state realizing one to an aw y which is harmful and injurious and 1 jurIOUS J of our industries is harin harmful ful an occupy to and every other industry |
