Show notes from the northwest spokane wash feb 23 the consolidated mining smelting smelling Sm elting company of canada which owns and operates the le roi war eagle and centre star groups of cop mines in rossland the sullivan per gold st eugene and several smaller lead silver zinc properties in the ainsworth slocan region and a smelter at trail now the largest corporation operating in iii british columbia has increased its capitalization from to the funds derived from the augmented capitalization will be devoted to financing construction of additions to the smelter at trail and to the purchase of the common stock of the west kootenay power light company in which lorne lome A campbell member of parliament from the rossland rosslan d constituency recently appointed minister of mines for british columbia is the controlling factor the west kootenay company has a power station at bonnington falls on the kootenay river midway between nelson and slocan city which now is developing approximately horsepower and it is said that the energy production can be increased largely at comparatively small expense the plant provides current for the granby consolidated companas Comp anys smelter at grand forks and its mines at phoenix the british columbia copper companas Comp anys smelter at greenwood and the canadian consolidated soli dated companas Comp anys reduction works at trail the latter is consuming horsepower daily and the consumption probably will be increased to horsepower as electrolytic zinc smelter soon as the new and copper refinery are in in operation the trail smelter the trail smelter originally constructed to treat the ores of the rossland mines has been increased to one of the largest enterprises of this character on the continent and it now can be regarded as the keystone of the mining industry of all 0 of f southern british columbia from a small copper matting plant built in 1896 by the late F august heinze hein ze and james breen it if has grown gradually to include a lead smelter and refinery and a factory for production of lead pipe converters for production of blister copper now are being installed together with an electrolytic plant tor for producing absolutely pure spelter from crude zinc ore the latter with an initial capacity of seventy five tons of spelter daily representing an expenditure of approximately will be operating not lot later than march 1 and the copper converters will be ready for service by march 15 when these additions are completed a copper refinery will be constructed ted mines are producing the rossland companas comp anys an average of tons of copper gold ore weekly and the material goes d di erectly to the trail smelter without any ally preliminary treatment save sampling it is roasted immediately on arrival at the point as is also the lead silver zinc product of the ainsworth slocan properties and the roasting departments in themselves are gigantic the new sampling mill for the lead ores is an immense structure now rapidly nearing completion and is the last word in construction and equipment the very latest appliances known to metallurgical practice being incorporated in the system lead furnaces the lead smelter consists of four immense furnaces but the bulk of the ore treated is so refractory that but three of the battery producing a low grade matte from the crude product can be kept operating continuously as one practically is always out of commission because of freezing up almost as soon as a furnace is blown in it begins to crust and it is but a question of time until it freezes and has to be dug out by hand this trouble is due to the large percentage of zinc and antimony in the ore but it is believed that the dif difficulty y will be obviated when the electrolytic tro zinc smelter is operating as the ore will be treated there first and the zinc content extracted before it is sent to the lead furnaces the lead bullion goes directly from the furnaces to the refinery where the gold and silver are precipitated in slimes and the lead dissolved by an 11 per cent acid solution and by the electrolytic process on thin sheets of previously refined lead the product testing per cent pure said to be the highest grade material of the kind produced by any in the world electrolytic lead w was as produced first at the trail smelter and the refining plant is estimated to have on hand at all times not less les s than worth of refined metal melted into pigs that later the sheets are for domestic consumption being cast in ninety six pound bars and those for the chinese trade in pound bars as the or oriental importers see that the material is put blocks possible of handling into the largest by the coolies at the delivery ports where the handling charges are based on pieces and not on weight dividends operating in the mining companies northwestern territory by march I 1 will have paid for the current year increasing the grand total of the corporations now distributing dividends to 66 of this amount the coeur da dalene lene for distributed concerns will have and british 1916 making the total columbia will contribute for date making the aggregate the with the exception of standard which is controlled by spokane interests and pays 21 cents the share or monthly make quarterly disbursements canadian consolidated has been paying 2 the share or but recently the directors increased the capitalization from to and it is not known what the dividend rate will be in future granby is paying the share or quarterly but the directors plan to reduce the par value of the shares from to 25 each increasing the issued stock fourfold and if this is done the disbursements will be 1 the share or approximately |
