Show electra electrical cal power in 1 n utah idaho and colorado controlling and operating twenty five hydroelectric hydro electric power plants in utah and idaho which lead into a transmission system of 1487 miles of lines the utah power light company with general offices in salt lake city serves a territory in these two states over three hundred miles in length extending from ashton idaho on the north to eureka utah on the south and embracing four of the most fertile valleys in southeastern idaho together with the rich valley lands of northern and central utah and the principal minin mining gand and smelt ing centers of the state the western colorado power company with general offices at durango colorado is a subsidiary concern of the utah power light company and serves an extensive territory in southwestern colorado its lines reach most of the important mining properties in that section of the state the utah power light company through its own organization and that of the western colorado power company owns and operates at present a total of thirty hydroelectric hydro electric power plants and seven steam plants in utah idaho and colorado these thirty seven plants gen ate horsepower anticipating a very rapid and substantial development of the market for electric service throughout the intermountain west the company has secured additional power sites that make possible the ultimate development of ample power to supply any possible growth of this market organized late in 1913 the utah power light company was originally incorporated for this was later increased to during the past year the company has purchased and consolidated soli dated twenty five hydroelectric hydro electric power plants in utah and idaho and in addition 4 in booklet prepared for salt lake mooting meeting 0 of f th the e A 1 I AT E has completed the initial work on comprehensive plans for developing many hundreds of thousands of additional horsepower along the snake and bear rivers in idaho in the future the principal increases to the companas comp anys power supply will be from power sites along the latter stream at present the power plants at grace on bear river form the largest single source of power supply for the utah power light companas Comp anys system bear river is the largest stream in the interior basin rising in northeastern utah it flows northward through utah and wyoming entering idaho and then making a large loop southward flowing south on the west side of the mountains and finally entering utah again and emptying into great salt lake bear lake lies at an elevation of over 1700 feet above great salt lake and the length of the river is slightly over miles at several points the river falls rapidly and located at these points are the sites for the present and future power houses of the company in southeastern idaho bear river flows near and to the north of bear lake a large body of fresh water approximately square miles in area at one point miles distant the river is considerably above the lake while at another point several miles down stream the river is be below low the lake by means of inlet and outlet canals the flood waters of the river are diverted and stored in the lake each year and released during low water seasons the capacity of the lake as a reservoir is such as to pe permit amit the equalization of the flow of the river not only throughout a single year bu but t throughout a period of many years the immense storage capacity of bear lake is also to be utilized in the development oam ent of important irrigation projects several million dollars has already gone into new development work along bear river embracing the construction of a new inlet canal connecting bear river and and bear lake the enlargement of the outlet canal connecting the lake and the river the construction of a new power house at grace sixty seven miles down the river from bear lake together with the completion of a wood stave pipe line eleven feet in diameter and feet long at this site the erection of a large reinforced concrete dam at oneida thirty four miles farther down bear river from grace and the erection at this point of a very large reservoir together with the erection of a new power house below the dam forms a second important division of the work along bear river the first of two twin steel tower transmission lines miles long running from grace idaho to a new terminal substation six miles west of salt lake has been completed and is now in operation the line jine carries a current of volts in intact tact from grace to salt lake the new terminal substation was completed at a cost of over half a million dollars and besides the power developed on bear river the electrical energy produced by practically all of the consolidated properties in utah and idaho is carried to the ne new w terminal and from that point distributed over the system several hundred thousand dollars has been spent during the past year in improving the equipment and service of these consolidated properties utah power light company Compa and its subsidiary the western colorado power company total installed generating capacity begin with the storage of the flood waters of the river in bear lake each year until such seasons as this excess water is required to maintain a normal flow in the stream several years ago the dingle canal was constructed for the purpose of carrying the flood waters of the stream into the lake annually an outlet canal some fourteen miles long was constructed at the same time connecting the lake with the river at a point lower down the utah power light company has now completed a new canal running fro from in the river to the lake and known as the rainbow canal it is miles long 80 feet wide and 10 feet deep and is to be enlarged later as needed this canal is to supplement the work of the dingle canal in storing the excess river water in the lake the present pre sent outlet canal is to be gradually enlarged to approximately a width of feet and a depth of 10 feet A large electrically operated pumping plant is to be installed in the lake to augment the flow of the outlet canal when necessary A suction dredge constructed by the company on bear river has been used in constructing the new rainbow canal and enlarging the th e present outlet canal these operations will make it possible for the utah power light company to not only maintain a normal ilow flow in the river at all seasons of the year but in addition will make available a very large amount of water for irrigation purposes and important developments are expected in the latter field in the immediate future bear lake is feet above sea level generating power P ower at grace idaho the first point on bear river below bear lake at which the utah power light company ge generates aerates hydroelectric hydro electric power is at I 1 grace 67 miles below the canals connecting the river and bear lake and approximately miles in a direct line north of salt lake city at this point the river makes a big bend and drops rapidly through a lava rock walled canyon A timber crib rock filled dam with a crest length of feet diverts the river water at the upper end of the canyon to pipe lines which carry the water nearly five miles across a plateau to the rim rock at the lower mouth of the canyon where penstocks pen stocks lead down to the power houses located at the rivers edge the total installed capacity of these power houses is kilowatts the new pipe line built by the company consists of feet of 11 foot diameter wood stave pipe resting on concrete saddles and terminating mina ting in a steel surge tank 30 feet in diameter and 1321 feet high the penstock leading down to the new power house is a riveted steel pipe 2530 feet long and varying in diameter from 7 feet to 6 feet the installation in the new power house at grace consists of two horsepower vertical single runner revolutions per minute francis turbines with kingsbury thrust bearings two kilowatt volt 60 cycle revolutions per minute generators six kilo kilowatt wate outdoor type volts to volts transformers and three 2000 kilowatt outdoor type to volts transformers together with outdoor high tension switching equipment completes the installation of the new grace power house power is delivered to two volt lines and three volt lines oneida reservoir and power house rear bear r river iver in idaho oneida is located on thirty four miles below grace and about miles in a direct line north of salt lake city the work completed here includes a gravity section concrete dam eighty five feet high feet long at the top with a volume of cubic yards by means of half a mile of this dam and approximately waterway a gross head of feet is secured at oneida the dam and water way load reservoir ideal for form a large peak governing purposes and for carrying peak loads far in excess of the average power available from the stream tiow now the dam ird and intake house the latter a concrete and steel structure built in an earthen dike with gates and openings for two sixteen foot diameter pipes have been completed and the first installation of the power house together with the first of the sixteen foot diameter pipe lines is now under construction this pipe line will be 2225 feet long terminating in a steel surge tank 40 feet in diameter and feet high from which t two no 12 foot diameter steel penstocks pen stocks each 10 feet long will lead to the turbines of the new power house the first installation of the latter consists of two horsepower vertical single runner francis turbines two kilowatt volt generators six kilowatt outdoor type volts to volts transformers and a complete outdoor type high tension switching equipment power will be delivered to the main volt lines leading from grace to salt lake city continued in next issue |
