Show 6 university OF TEXAS dr wm B phillips director of the university of texas bureau of economic geology and technology has given out the following brief resume of the work of the bureau during the past two years during the two years ending sept 1 1914 this bureau has conducted extensive investigations of the fuels used in texas and has issued and a special bulletin on the subject no the ei experimental peri mental gas plant was in constant operation during this time but has now been dismantled to make room for the new laboratory for testing all kinds of material used in road building such as rock gravel sand clay concrete brick asphalt oil etc practically every variety of coal and lignite produced in the state has been examined in great detail including the yield and quality of gas etc the laboratory work has included the analysis of about 1500 samples representing the raw and manufactured mineral products of the state specifications for the purchase e of fuel by the state purchases 1 n 9 agent and by the university have been prepared and many analyses of such materials have been made during the last two years the field work of the bureau has included examinations of man many oil and gas districts A special feature has been all exhaustive study of the formations pen retreated in the deepest well ever bored in texas at spur dickens county this well reached a depth of feet and the study of the strata has given the key to the geology of a large portion of adjoining territory field work now in progress includes investigations of the formation west of the pecos river and a study of the water resources of hale county A complete laboratory for the testing of road material already referred to is now being installed and a special field man has been employed for collecting samples A map of the area northeast of fort worth has been prepared and is now ready to be engraved it if shows that location of all oil and gas districts deposits of coal limestone copper ore gypsum etc now being worked the publications of the bureau have been as f follows the mineral resources of texas 1910 the composition of texas coals and and the use of producer gas in texas 1911 reconnaissance report on the oil and gas fields of wichita and clay Count counties les 1912 the fuels used in texas 1914 the deep boring at spur map of east and northeast texas showing the location of producing oil fields deposits of iron ore lignite etc 1912 there is now on hand and nearly ready for the printer a special bulletin to be used as a mineral reference book for texas it will contain statistics of mineral production since the earliest times the mineral resources of each county with the area population property valuation railroad mileage etc elevations of cities towns villages mountains and mountain ranges the text of the new mining law the latitude and longitude of important places tables of magnetic declaration etc many additions have been made to the museum and it now contains the best collection of economic material ever brought together in iii the state |
