Show UTAH COAL FOR COAST TRADE in the last issue of the mining review mention was made of the fact that utah coal producers had addressed a letter to the proper government officials requesting that facilities be supplied at san francisco bay so that utah coal could be delivered by rail to ocean going ships copies CO ples of this were sent to president wilson who referred it to the secretary of the navy and to paymaster T J cowle cowie of san francisco chief of the bureau of supplies and accounts the text of the letter is as follows we would respectfully invite your attention and serious consideration to what we feel to be an unnatural condition in that the coal requirements of the united states navy and the army at mare island the presidio and elsewhere along the pacific coast have for many years and are now being supplied with fore foreign ign coals or coals mined on the eastern coast of the united states and transported by vessel to the various coaling stations and other pacific coast points of consumption notwithstanding the fact that inland on the pacific slope of the united states are large bodies of bituminous coal of most excellent quality in an advanced stage of development further in this same inland district there remain very large areas of bituminous coal owned by the government undene undeveloped lope dand and which will no doubt remain undeveloped until a larger market on the pacific coast and beyond is established the markets of and available to the pacific slope are for obvious reasons much narrower than those of the east coast of the united states where the markets of the world are open to tile the eastern producers especially those of the state of utah therefore feel that the coal requirements of the pacific slope logically and naturally should be supplied from this section of the country in disturbed or generally unsettled times for the the water routes normally available coast ar a e movement of coal to the pacific it H A OC V subject to serious interruption and ana ad a national curs to us that it would be a d vantage for the government to be pr prepa e par e d handle coa coals to promptly and economically as U utah a from close inland sources such the co coal with and to establish such relations as wo producers of our western states development developing lopin encourage them in the further deve byest of the of the enormous coal deposits rail connection desired bia states united while it is true that the has established a very modern coaling station at california city in san francisco bay yet vet as we understand such facilities this date provide only for the handling a at route however Howe it is the water of coal pal by our information that your department has been considering the advisability of providing facilities that will permit of the prompt and economical transfer and handling by barges of inland coals loaded in railroad cars from railroad terminals to the docks at california city we earnestly trust that we have been correctly informed and that such facilities may soon become a reality not only at california city but at all other government coaling stations on the pacific coast the undersigned undersigner under signed coal producers of carbon county utah respectfully represent to you that in the year 1913 they produced tons of bituminous coal which we do not believe is equaled in quality by any other bituminous coal field in the united rt states artates ates unless it be the pocahontas and new river coal fields of virginia this utah coal is of very hard texture free from foreign substances low in ash and moisture suffers little from long storage and does not ignite easily from spontaneous combustion while in storage the coal producers of carbon county utah have spent millions of dollars in the purchase development and equipment of their coal mining properties which properties are at this time developed to such an extent as will easily meet all the requirements of the pacific slope and they are prepared to further develop these coal deposits to meet any increased marret market demand quick and prompt delivery the carbon county coal fields in utah have extensive and efficient railroad facilities connecting with the four lines of railroad reaching the pacific coast thus affording absolute assurance of the quick and prompt delivery of utah coals to the principal seaports of the pacific coast i e port land nd seattle san francisco east san pedro and san diego and full train deliveries of utah coal can be made within a week from receipt of order as against a thirty day movement even though the canal as we understand it for coal mined oil n the eastern coast of the united states this quick service should obviate fhe feces baity ty of the government carrying large re serve rye stock of coal at its coaling stations which ich it is obliged to do while solely dependent upon coals received by the water I 1 i route I 1 wa e therefore and solicit from you early earnest earnes consideration of any plans your department Part ment may have in mind for providing railroad connections at the california city a and other western coaling stations and we further boer court from your department full instigation sti vesti gation of the ability of the utah coal producers to promptly and satisfactorily serve the government with a high
