Show MAY DAY AS A ZINC PRODUCER interesting report of superintendent outlines history of new zinc producer C C griggs superintendent of the may day mining company operating ing in the tintic gintic district of utah recently submitted a report to the directors which takes up in an interesting way the development of the may day as a producer of zinc ore this report follows in detail the era of prosperity probably dates from the time you thought the zinc ores in the may day mining companas comp anys ground should have some commercial value I 1 believe it was in july that the subject was first mentioned it took some time to locate the buyers of zinc ores and then some more time in obtaining a contract that would prove profitable for us to handle the ores in august we sent out four cars car s it in r the nature of an experiment to determine just what could be done with our ores as well as to find if the ores contained any interfering elements that might cause our dur ores not to be acceptable to the zinc smelt eries the results from these four cars proved our ores to be very desirable and in fact the smelters shelters sm elters were very anxious for them some kinds being quite rare and very easily treated if you can say that any zinc ore is easily treated at this time however the freight rates were so high it was not deemed advisable to ship under the existing conditions and shipments were not continued until the matter of freight rate adjustment had been taken up with the interstate commerce commission and after a long wait and one very vexatious deay de ay the rates were lowered lovered and it was the middle of october that our zinc shipments became a steady feature since that time we have shipped from to 1000 tons per month I 1 believe the average would be about tons per month in this brief history of the entering of the may day as a zinc mine it might be well to state that it was our efforts and your judgment that opened this new phase of raining mining in the district and it was not long before the other mines followed our example and now there are at least four other producers of zinc ore in the district the may day mining company is to be congratulated upon having officers in charge of its affairs who are able to grasp the opportunities as they present themselves and who are on the alert to take advantage of chances to market ores of a different character than those ordinarily ordin arly produced we find the zinc ore on all the leves levels from the upper workings feet above the th e hoist level clear through the mi mine ie to the foot level le vel following quite generally the old of lead ore but occasion aly making off in a break by itself away from the old we find this ore very verb continuous in some gome places being as much as aa twenty feet thick and in other places rowing up to two feet wide our nar dar first mate of tonnage was that we might be b eti able I 1 to ship tons 6 but we have shipped I 1 cars of fifty tons each amounting to about I 1 tons and I 1 should say that lor for a all estimate at this time I 1 would probably be 61 safe aa i saying sayin that we still have tolls ton s available for shipping in making this estimate it will be noted that I 1 state the tonnage available for shin AID ping we have a great quantity of low grade zinc ore in in the mine running from 18 to 22 per cent that I 1 have not included in this estimate for the minimum grade of ore that can be shipped on our contract is 28 per cent and I 1 do not include any ot of the lower grade ores in this estimate while we have made the bulk of our shipments from zinc ore deposits we have been doing some good development deve work for lead ores with the result that we have opened up a fine body of lead ore on tte the level between the 1000 and 1100 le levels vess it seems that through the mine especially from the level down we have a very ver y pronounced and large vein of quartz a al most unbroken in extent from one level to another in this large vein of quartz occur lenses or deposits of lead ore we first en countered one of these lead lenses on the level some years ago then about two year ago we encountered another lens of ore above the level in the same vein from both these enrichments enrich ments we extracted good shipping ore we however notice that the deeper the deposits the better the grade of ore and the larger the enrichment accordingly ve we sunk the incline to the 1100 level drifted from there and by means of a short raise encountered another lens of lead ore we worked ore from this place to aa a level above the 1000 and later connected the 1000 with this ore body and practically al 0 the shipments of lead ore from the may day mine for the past year have come from fro this last place at the present time we have a large extending from about forty feet above the 1100 to about the same distance above the 1000 level this is on a dip of about 35 degrees and from the ex upper point to the extreme bot bottom tOlOn point it is close to feet we still have j ore blocked out for some time to come but it is evident that the vein is going deeper and we should arrange to do some ome s deep prospecting with the contini contin uty luty of the vein of qua quartz aa a at and with these enrichments enrich ments occurring regular intervals it is almost self evident eviden that we are on the track of a fe feeder eder that tn will lead us to a deep mine should d ye we de cide to carry the prospecting farther gouid strongly recommend that this be next step taken by the may day wj either e company arrange in some manner or by sin s with neighboring companies our own shaft deeper to do some pros I 1 ing in we have every encouragement that could be given to do this work and I 1 am confident that the may day will be the first to demonstrate deep ores on this side of the mountain could this be arranged in connection with this I 1 might also say that the quartz vein is still strong and large below the 1100 level and it is almost a certainty that a mine can be opened on the deeper levels it will be noticed in the financial statement ment that some of the ores were produced by lessees lessels les sees this proved to be an effective and economical method of opening up our resources I 1 the leases all expired january 1 1913 since which time all work has been done on company account another important undertaking has been accomplished during the past year the I 1 may day company has chan changed ged its power from steam to electricity the change was made during the summer months the best time of the year to make surface improvements and we installed a new electric hoisting engine new power line to connect with the knight power companas comp anys line changed our steam compressor over to electric drive and rearranged our whole water system this was all expensive and while we did it at the time we were waiting for the new freight rates on our zinc ore it was all done without interfering with the dividend to stockholders and it means a great saving in our overhead expenses conservatively it has cut our operating expense down from in the neighborhood of per month to about As a summary 1 I would say that the may day mining company has a bright future before it especially should the price of zinc come back anywhere near what it should be we have a nice tonnage of lead ore blocked out everything favorable for future prospecting a large tonnage of good gade zinc ore available and last but not least one of the most economically run companies in the district the financial statement for the year ending march 31 1913 follows receipts from lead ore tons value april 1912 may imay june july sept oct nov dec 17 jan 1913 feb march total 2 64 92 2 3 JO
