Show in connection with the failure of congress to provide for the shipment of bullion from assay office to mint why not make the franking privilege of some real use and ship bullion by mail under frank this would be of much more benefit than the mass of useless literature now sent out under franking privileges 1 if utah cannot as yet come to the front with a new camp came it is of considerable bene fit to the state when some of our tributary f neighbors can do so in this issue we pre I 1 sent nt an account of a new camp in oregon I 1 which bids fair to come in for much dav I 1 j arable attention in the near future andie utah does not derive great be benefit from it it will be the fault of utah mining men we refer to the mines being developed in the mountains again we hear statements as to the camp of mercur being dead As showing that there is some life still there the recent serles series of articles in the mining review describe operations at two mills in the district we have had such a demand for this series that it has now been reissued in a 72 page pamphlet containing forty one illustrations lust rations and many and complete details of the performances of the past and the present in the mercur district details are given in our advertising columns the failure of passage of the emergency deficiency bill in congress leaves the united states assay office without funds to pay for the transportation of bullion to ithe mint this means that in selling bullion to the local assay office the seller must pay the charges to the mint this results in barring the assay office from accepting bullion and cripples these offices attempts have been made before to cause the abandonment of the local office as well as others in the west but these efforts have been defeated however it would appear that there is more than one way of accomplishing comp lishing the same result it is stated that the of the ohio copper company which has mines at bingham and a mill at lark utah has been offered to george W waddell formerly in char charge chare e of the mill of the nevada consolidated at mcgill nevada should mr air waddell accept the ithe plan is to have the present manager al frank act as consulting engineer I 1 ineer and devote his energies to the mine the trouble with ohio copper is largely one of improper milling from the beginning the mill has not done the work it should and it is believed to be for the best interests of the company to have a manager who is a millman and one familiar with the milling of the porphyry ores A short time ago a new mill superintendent was engaged who formerly was at the nevada con plant so that if the proposed change goes through ane company will have two officials trained under the jackling regime does this mean that at last the jackling or guggenheim interests have a controlling interest in ohio copper or is it merely a coincidence 0 F im cameron of salt lake the well known coal operator has recently organized the cameron coal company which is opening a new coal mine at castle gate rock a mile and a half above the town of castle gate in carbon county utah mah analyses show this to be one of the best coals in the state |
