Show NEW RAILROADS FOR nn EASTERN UTAH COAL FIELDS during the past two or three years the diversified resources of the eastern portion of utah have attracted widespread attention and a country wonderfully rich in its possibilities but which has long remained dormant and almost unknown has taken on life until it now looks as if this would in while oil indications are such that capital feels warranted in making search for the underground reservoirs of this valuable commodity the agricultural possibilities of the valleys and the uplands have been proven beyond a doubt and yet it has only been bee n but recently that there has been a SALT LAKE CITY t in arl r VERNAL A ya 1 T 0 N ja castl ej MINI NCr D ST 9 TU 14 COLTO 1 I 1 74 r I 1 FF ICE 15 ad HIAWATHA A MANTI spot T styf Pt yF map showing proposed new railroad construction time become one of the most productive and valuable portions of the state eastern utah long considered a wild and almost inaccessible region is in reality a vast stretch of country teeming with mineral wealth it abounds in the precious metals it has recently been shown that its deserts are stored with rare metals such as uranium and vanadium and hundreds of square miles cover coal measures which can hardly be duplicated anywhere else in the world the hydrocarbons hydro carbons exist in commercial quantity also for there we find asphalt gilsonite and mineral wax general awakening to the fair promise made by this portion of the west of course we all know that the coal measures of eastern utah have been utilized in a limited way for a number of years but it was not until the past two or three years when several new coal companies began the development and operation of as many new mines that general attention was called to what might be accomplished in this branch of the mining industry in this neglected territory the wonderful success attending these new ventures however has seemingly caused a landslide of interest to the coal fields and capital is now tumbling over itself in order to take advantage of opportunities which have long waited for recognition and to such an extent has operation been carried on in the development of f these coal fields that it was not long before it was discovered that the transportation facilities cili ties were inadequate to take care of rapidly growing business a condition and not a theory that proved to be a formidable handicap in carrying out well laid plans for a tremendous increase in coal production in supplying the markets of the west with utah mined coal and yet it was not bell believed eved that a remedy was near at hand and that the problem would be easily solved in the very near future it is with pleasure and gratification therefore that it is learned that two corporations po rations each beach having plenty or of capital at its command have entered the field with the intention of making railroad extensions of building new lines until the demand for improved transportation facilities shall have been fully met the first of these to give publicity of its intentions the utah coal coke company expects to expend something like ten million in railroad construction and in the acquisition of coal mines the prime mover in this colossal enterprise ostensibly is W G sharp president of the united states smelting smelling Sm elting refining mining company who has already secured heavy interests in the holdings of the castle valley coal company the black hawk coal mining company the consolidated fuel company and the castle valley and southern utah railroad in emery county which are to be absorbed by the utah coal coke company which has already been incorporated for this purpose A railroad ninety miles in length for the exclusive handling of coal will be built at an estimated cost of this will be called the utah coal railroad and will be built from provo in utah county to mol mohrland irland in emery county the terminal of the castle valley railroad at the castle valley coal mine and but a few miles from the hiawatha mine of the consolidated fuel company the utah coal railroad beginning at provo will parallel the main line of the D R G road easterly as far as thistle from this point it will follow the marysvale Marys vale as far as hilltop when it will trend in a southeasterly direction to mohrland at provo the new road will connect with the D R G and also the salt lake route thus giving an outlet to the north and west and to coast points around los angeles the kenilworth helper railway the other enterprise which is equally as gigantic in its scope was inaugurated the first of the month by the filing of the e articles of incorporation of the kenilworth helper railroad company this company composed largely of well known salt lakers has been engaged in railroad operation in carbon county for the past three years and already has five or six miles of main line running from helper to the coal mines of the independent coal coke company at kenilworth the incorporation of the railroad company however was not for the sole purpose of operating the road between helper and kenilworth its scope of operation being broader and larger as it is the intention to build a railroad from salt lake to helper and from kenilworth northeasterly through the vernal country to a connection with a railroad in colorado presumably the moffat road and thus establish another trans con tin line through the state of utah besides which it is the intention to open up mammoth coal fields along its route the officers and directors of the kenil worth helper railroad company are as f follows C N strevell salt lake president and general manager james H paterson salt lake vice president and treasurer F A druehl salt lake secretary walter parker peoria ill III charles W buckley chicago normal B holter helena montana M H walker salt lake joseph geoghegan salt lake and I 1 1 L a edwards salt lake the official roster of the railroad is identical with that of the independent coal coke company now operating at kenilworth in carbon county the fact that two such strong companies are preparing to engage in railroad building in eastern utah and that both will be engaged independently in coal mining operations on a gigantic scale means much for that section and also for the state at large and it is understood that others owning valuable coal measures in this favored locality will now be encouraged to begin work in the development of properties which without doubt can soon be placed upon a producing and profit making basis |
