Show reputations reputation is a potent word in a mining dg sense for it can be and turned at so many different angles applied in so many directions and is so elastic that its meaning cabbe can be stretched to fit any requirement reputations can be either good or bad sometimes they are so bad that they are good or they may be the reverse it is an odd fact that men with the most unenviable reputations are often the most successful financially finan finali cally and the mines of the same class are often held in the highest public esteem on the other hand the man with an excellent reputation often finds that but few appreciate the same and properties with good clean records often find themselves shunned for ther more flashy disreputable brothers it is said that a good reputation begets a clear conscience but a a clear conscience is mighty unstable without the all important dollar behind it A splendid combination is a good reputation with a commerce commercial al value attached to it but unfortunately the two do not always go together how many times do we see an engineer with a reputation however attained and perhaps of questionable tio merit pulling down the big plums while the woods are full of men more competent more honest but blit without the reputation to bring them in public demand some of the so called leading engineers of the country are the biggest reseals outside of the penitentiary and yet their services are in great demand and their reports are eagerly sought by investors in mining shares another department of the mining business in which reputation is an important factor in that of promotion if a man can pull through several lar large ge deals whether the ultimate outcome is successful or not he is made if he makes good there are plenty of the solid responsible mining t men and careful investors who will go into any proposition with him if he never makes good but keeps himself much talked abut about and well advertised there are thousands of gullible suckers stickers who are willing to play the game with him it is surprising how so many of these men who never made a single success ur or accomplished anything but to skin the public manage to keep their following through t the many flascoe fiascos which they pull off they may not last as long as the fellow who is on the square but most of them manage to line their nests comfortably before getting to the end of the rope and so it is through all of the different stages of the mining business the millwright the mine manager the superintendent who has the reputation has the call reputations are usually difficult to obtain and some come by them fraudulently but they are indispensable and the honest well earned reputations wear the longest and are the most satisfactory in the end and so although there are so many false ones which seemingly answer the purpose there is more satisfaction in I 1 getting a good one one which will stand the test and never grow tarnished |
