audience that stamped and ard ap applauded applauded applauded and showed appreciation of the performance Perhaps no professionals who have appeared upon the boards of the historic old play house ever received the ovation that rosy roS cheeked checked lassies and I sturdy boyhood came in for during durin the I course courne of oC the tho performance And best of all It was not merely loyalty that prompt prompted ed cd tho the enthusiasm but rather rater unusual for tor an amateur production the Merry Milkmaids was decidedly good i It was not merely that the girls were slim and pretty with the grace of girl girlhood girlhood girlhood hood it was not only that the boys bo s were straight and manly but the choruses and solos the ensembles and the dances all were fully Cully worthy worth of the appreciation they received The costuming was rather elaborate the stage showing a gay ga riot of oC colors but then what could one ex expect expect x It was the normal class and Mrs lIn Martha Royle Boyle King Icing had h d a feminine eye upon the staging as well as insuring the musical success of oC the performance Probably the prettiest number of oC the entire performance was wm the finale of the th second act the youthful bride and bride bridegroom bridegroom bridegroom groom the nuptial wreaths wreath and the filmy summer gowns cowns of the chorus of some Ii all contributing to an exquisite stage tage pic picture picture picture ture As to the musical merit of 1 the perform performance ance there is nothing to be he said aid except the single bingle adjective excellent The Th solos and trios were perfectly blended while the choruses showed conclusive evi evidence evidence evidence dence of careful and painstaking rehear rehearsal rehearsal rehearsal sal Petite and pretty Miss Mae ONeill was an ideal stage queen while a Dorothy who looked her bur part of ofa ofa ofa a village flirt was Lillian McFarlane clad in gypsy garments swarthy swath and all pretty prett Claire Noall made a Monica a Romany lassie who looked the part while Ruth and Margery taken respective bs by Ella and Francis F Redfield Re field were demure dainty little actresses and showed indeed more than the average amateur talent As Farmer Jim Stanley Johnson made madea a decided hit With ith rare this young youn man made love lote and desponded with equal abandon while the Captain D B BH DH DH H Sandin was a gallant llant and doughty r commander indeed The judge jud e the round roun boyish face of Frederick Reher looked oddly beneath the gray Judicial wig proved an excellent piece of caricature while Willard Nisson and J Welton Velton Ward War Warin Wardin Var VarIn in dual roles of commodore beggar and doctor distinguished themselves Ward Tard as the peddler was particularly good But the boys bo s and girls who made up the fresh faced youthful chorus deserved deserve at least half halt the credit of oC the performance and at atthe atthe atthe the conclusion when a huge I U was let Jet letdown letdown down from the wings and the girls in pink blue and yellow and the boys in negligee rolled forth a local gag song the applause was simply deafening The Merry Milkmaids considered aside from Crom its interest as a local school per performance performance performance is musical tuneful and frolic frolicsome frolicsome some and Mrs Martha Royle King Ring who has spent so many man hours directing the production is to be congratulated congratulate on the success of Wednesday evening And incidentally In Incidentally IncidentallY the tIte instrumental numbers were verc
