Show I r RESERVOIRS FLOODED TOWN t Torrent Torr nt of Water Swept Through Derby Conn ConnI BUILDINGS S CARRIED AWAY E GAPED CARED DEATE DE I RBY BY Conn Feb 22 The break breakIng D II Ins Ing o three throe reservoirs in the town of Shelton early today caused damage estimated ted at t between and and there were several narrow escapes from death The torrent tore a great gully feet long and thirty feet wide Howe avenue Logs and trees and huge cakes of ot Ice lee were carried along and crashed into several buildings The house of Walter Nichols was struck by the flood Nichols was away and his wife was awakened by the ice crashing against the door A few min minutes minutes mm utes later lat r the water commenced to flow Into the bedrooms where six chil chit children children dren were sleeping Mrs Nichols hur hurried hurried ried nod to the door and held 11 ld it shut while her children escaped to an upper floor floorA A few moments later she escaped Just before the water forced in the door and flooded the rooms The family re remained remained prisoners In the upper part of the house until the water receded Warren Wilber was awakened by a cake of Ice lee crashing through his door He ran to the th street where the water was waist high and hurried to the nearest point of safety Several times he was hit by ice and fallen trees and painfully injured Ten minutes mh utes later the sides of the building were swept away and the bed in which he had been sleeping was carried away in the flood Street railway tracks and telephone and telegraph wires were all aU torn down and nd strewn about abo t in confusion contusion The reservoirs will have to be rebuilt and this with the property loss It Itis itIs itIs is believed will make the loss Several mills will remain idle until the gravel ravel swept into the raceways is re removed removed removed moved |
