Show Ing superintendent of ot the Yellowstone I park In his report to the sec see of or the Interior presents some in statements relative rel Uve to wild game me in the park During the early part pat of o the season large bands of elk and many man deer and antelope may be saon eo by the tourist traveling over the main mam roads of ot the park A number of ot mountain sheep have been seen quite lose to the road between Gardiner and Mammoth hot Springs and they were so tame that one could approach with in thirty yards or nearer on foot root with without out their being in the least l ast disturbed The antelope are rapidly increasing bands hands of ot from fifty to were fre frequently frequently frequently seen during the year In the vicinity of the town of Gardiner These beautiful b protected by the Jaws laws of Montana and but two were killed on their range along the Yellow Yellowstone stone river during the year Bear Increasing The bear have increased in numbers and to be a great groat source of interest to 10 the tUft tourist They arc are per harmless as long as they are let lot alone and kept In a perfectly wild but when whan they are fed and petted as some of ot them have been in inthe inthe 4 the past they lose all fear tear of human I I J beings and are liable to do consider considerable able Damage amage to property and provi provisions alons ion at the various hotels and camp campa They are also liable to tc frighten tourists by following them L with the expectation of being fed It Itis f is a difficult matter to make some of ol the tourists realize that the bear in S the park are wild and that it Is IB a dan dangerous dangerous matter to t trifle with them It II ItIs Is forbidden by the park regulations for anyone to feed the bear except at U te e regular garbage piles plies at the th ho hotels hotes tes tela A violation of this regulation I resulted In the serious Injury of a a tour iU went too close to the animals 1 for r the purpose or of photographing them At the last session of congress an appropriation of or was wilS made for the purpose of ot protecting the buffalo In the park Mr lr C J Jones better 1 known as Buffalo Jonda Jon was ap appointed a pointed as gam warden for the park f t and assisted in locating a a corral or ori I i enclosure for the care cave of or the buffalo i t This corral Is situated near Mammoth hot springs and will afford consider considerable consi erI I able abi shelter and feed for the buffalo I I In the way of or timber and grass for the winter In addition to this corral a asman small one has been constructed on I Pelican creek with a view to f Ing therein the few remaining buffalo b In the park Last winter of or these animals were located on the head of f Pelican creek and there are ara probably a few more In the tho park This herd hord Is exceedingly wild and probably 1 ably abb will vill never In increase rease In n size and possibly p may die out completely It Is I thought some of the young oung animals of this herd may maj be caught up during the l present winter and turned in with the theother theother other buffalo that be he 1 are aret re to purchased It Is 18 believed if a new herd of buffalo J JiA Is iA raised under fence they will become J tame and when sufficiently increased sed in I numbers may be gradually turned loose In the park and will not be frightened out of the country or driven Into the high mountains by the appearance of ot the summer tourist To 10 start this new l herd fourteen buffaloes have been pur purchased j chased from the Allard herd of at Medora l N D n Warning to
