ot Labor today delivered an impassioned warning to the members of the organ organization organIzation organization that the immediate future of trade and labor lab r assemblies w was as serious seriously ly endangered by the conflicting claims of ot jurisdiction made by different bodies Unless UnIes such things were fixed In calm calmness calmness ness nez and handled with moderation he declared the labor organizations of the country would soon be involved In Ina Ina Ina a conflict which would by b comparison dwarf all the struggles In ill which labor organizations have so far engaged d The matter would unless checked he as asserted cone come to a point where laboring 1 p men would fight with W ith laboring meri mert men J from behind barricades in the manner in which men deal with their mortal foes His warning of danger and his counsels of peace and moderation met with a hearty response from the as assembled assembled assembled delegates and wild applause greeted the speaker as he closed that portion of ot his annual address addless in which he lie had pointed out the perils perUs which In his opinion will surely come unless methods are altered and altered soon r The first day of ot the convention aside from the address of President Gompers was not of great interest to outsiders and many delegates found it fatiguing The morning session was occupied with addresses of ot welcome and responses and the report of the committee on credentials The afternoon was con consumed conI consumed by the address of President Gompers which occupied two hours and annual convention of the American Federation of Labor met this morning at 1030 in Odd Fel Fellows Fellows el lows hall ball with about delegates present The delegates were escorted from the St Charles mansion by the members of ot the local Trades and Labor i assembly headed by Robert E Lee president pres ent of the he local organization and by James Leonard n r d the he Federation Fed or hr of or New Orleans He closed with witha a warm tribute to President Gompers personally declaring that the members of or the Federation Fed would follow him to the end President Gompers declared in his reply that he h fully appreciated what whatever whatever t ever was said of him personally and thought he could best show his ap appreciation r predatIon by b his silence regarding it Boasted R asted Eliot After touching upon the scope and bearing of the th labor union movement President declared that It was amazing to note the ignorance among educated people aims alms and objects of the about Credentials Creden Committee It Was as recommended that credentials be denied to a number of delegates who were opposed chiefly because of non nonpayment nonPayment nonpayment payment of du dues s B A protest against the seating beating of the delegates of the Amalga Amalgamated Amalgamated mated Association As of Carpenters was iI 1 P made by the United Brotherhood of r Carpenters Carp and Joiners Upon motion the contest con test was referred back to the committee for further action J B moved that a special committee be appointed to which all disputes s should be referred this com corn committee committee to report direct to the conven convention convention convention tion This motion which removed much of the work incidental to the dispute the carpenters from the floor of the cration President Gompers reported as 9 follows Six new nev national unions were formed during the year and two are arenow arenow arenow now in the process of formation while others will soon be in a position to have hao hv a national or or international char charter ch charter l lter ter formed from existing local unions of the trade In all new charters were issued to and international unions 14 6 central la Ia labor labor bor unions local trade unions and federal labor unions Total 1024 At the end of the fiscal year eleven months Sept 30 1902 1002 we had affiliated affiliated with the American Federation of Labor national and international unions with approximately local unions under their direct jurisdiction 99 state federations 26 city central bodies local federal labor unions
