training from the varied de demands demands demands mands of a newspaper office And he was a a good worker and interested Int rested in everything which was going goingS on and he be made a s 8 reporter and later a capable city editor As reporter on the Jacksonville Courier he earned 10 a u uI aI I I week and by saving as many of his 10 bills as he possibly could he was able to enter the law department d of Ann Arbor university the year following his graduation from the Jacksonville college However he had hadnot hadnot hadnot not enough money to carry him through the school year ear and the next year found him back in Jacksonville and again in the newspaper business He had a good reputation as a news gath gatherer gatherer gatherer in Jacksonville and the position of city editor was offered him He went to work at noon gave out his assign assignments assignments ments meats leaving the most difficult one for himself He was out covering this assignment all afternoon but was ready again at 6 i for the evening work and often would not get into the theoffice theoffice theoffice office until midnight to write his copy cop read and edit what the reporters had gotten together and which the students of the university held z zAs As a lawyer admitted to practice pr in both Michigan and Illinois he went back to Jacksonville and opened a law office and a 8 political career It was Melville lI W Fuller granted him special courtesies as one of the promising young members of the southern Illinois bar Justice Fuller was a member twentythree three years be before before fore foce of
