assistant professor of hygiene and physiology at the University University sity sky of Utah delivered a lecture to the members of the senior normal class cla s in Ink hygiene k ne Wednesday afternoon on the typhoid epidemic He dwelt on the causes of the disease di ea e and the simple preventives which could be used He said in part p rt Typhoid fever one of the most common and most dreaded dis die diseases diseases eases of the fall of the year has hu apparently apparently secured a strong foothold in Salt Lake The causes of the disease are many but the most common source of infection comes from drinking water and from milk which has been contaminated contamInated mated by the germs In districts where sewerage systems are lacking Jacking the germs often get into the water wat from waste matter which has been carelessly thrown around during some previous time and which finally finds its way to the water supply In cities however which have a aI I sewerage system typhoid is either caused ca by Improper precautions on the part Mirt of the citizens or by gross care carelessness on the part of others In the latter alter case milk is generally to blame for tor the spread of disease di ease Milk is one of the most favorable media in which typhoid germs can develop In water eases cases ca e where the disease comes from water supplies it is generally caused by persons afflicted a with the disease carelessly carelee ly depositing waste matter within easy easy reach of the stream In either case however absolute safety can be assured if people will boll boil their drinking water and also their milk The typhoid germs are killed by a comparatively low heat so that an or ordinary ordinary ordinary amount of sterilization assures safety In the present epidemic the lo local local local cal newspapers are fire to be congratulated for fOT or Ul great work they are doing for forth th tb h public Through their columns the people of the city have been warned o othe of the spread of ot the dreaded disease anc and have thus been given ample time to take precautions for their own safety I Ithe It If the students in ln this class will report al all known cases to the city health board boar and ann also to the local newspapers rs they will wUl be doing a great service to td t the au authorities authorities who are attempting to stamp out the disease and also to the citizens who live in the vicinity of the place where the disease is located n |
