Show I MILLERS TO I UP OLD SACKS i Given Extension of Time to Be Begin Begin j gin Stamping the Correct I Flour Weight on I Members of the state pure food foad corn com commission mission were busily engaged Thursday I afternoon In considering the question of the proper labeling of food prod I and in listening to reports of the officers cf ct the state bureau In ad addition addition addition to holding their regular meet meeting meetIng meetIng ing to consider several matters mattert of Ot im ml importance importance the members of the state com coin commission mission had a conference with about a dozen duzen representatives of the Utah Millers association on the matter of ot the proper labeling of flour sold in inthe Inthe inthe the state tate to show the correct weight of the product The state bureau had fixed Oct 1 11 as the limit of time for the proper I Isacks I stenciling of or the weight on flour sacks The flour mill people desired an extension of this time limit saying that they had ordered from to sacks sack for the fall faU trade and wished to get rid of what they the have on hand before the order goes into ef effect effect feet The state bureau decided to grant them an extension to Jan 1 I for forthe forthe forthe the proper marking of ot the sacks r The question of ot the shrinkage of flour was one of those discussed at the meeting the representatives of the mil rail millers millers lers lens saying that they the must make allow allowances allowances ances for shrinkage for periods of from three to six months Meeting with the representatives of the millers were all the five members of the state bureau Including J S SCarver SCarver Carver Carvel of Ogden president T P A Wil Williams hams liams of Salt Lake secretary George Hone of Benjamin Herman Harms R state chemist and Willard Hansen jr state dairy and food commissioner Canning Factory Goods G j Following the meeting with the rep representatives representative of the milling interests the members of the state bureau went into a meeting for the discussion of other questions One of the chief sub subjects subjects I taken up was the alleged im Ira improper proper labeling of certain products put putout putout putout out by canning factories of the state It had been reported by b one of the inspectors of the bureau that several I canning factories cf the state have I been using the parings and other waste portions portion of tomatoes in the mak making I ing lag of catsup and that the product was wasso wasso wasso so labeled as to represent that th t the cat catsup catsup catsup sup was made from the whole tomato Samples Sample had been brought brou ht In which were obtained at the factories and I these were submitted to the tile bureau The bureau decided that in the fu future future ture where such portions of the toma tomato to are used in the making of catsup the label must so specify the board t basing its action on Section S 8 of Reg Regulation t 26 2 included in Circular No 10 21 jl 1 revised of the United States Stales depart department ment of agriculture a rules and regula regulations regulations I for the enforcement of the pure food laws Jaws This section reads as fol lows When an article is made up of ref refuse refuse use materials fragments or trimmings the use of the name of the time substance from they are derived unless s I accompanied by statement a to that ef effect effect shall be deemed a misbranding Packages of such material may be la Ja pieces stems stema trimmings or OT with some similar appellation The state bureau also allo received re rf reports reports ports from Commissioner Hansen and Chemist Harms on their visit to the I convention of national and state pure food associations recently held at Den Denver Denver I ver ve Wormy Nuts at Provo L D Stewart deputy state food In Inspector Inspector Inspector I at Provo condemned 2448 2415 pounds of wormy worm nuts at Provo Prove prop property erty city of the Z C M I Officials of the Z C M I believed the nuts to be wormy and asked ked for or an inspection from the state department The nuts came carne from California and were found I to be full of worms They were con by Dr Stewart and destroyed The state food and dairy commission commissioner t er has lost a good officer In Dr Stew tew Stewart Stewart art as he has just sent in Iii his nation He will return to the east to resume his medical studies Owing i ito I to the lack of 0 funds In the food com coin i I missioners office only the tIme two ties lIel will be kept on and the office at Provo will go unfilled |
