of the Gods God presented at the Colonial theatre last evening is one of those thoe dramas which strikes 11 U but does not quite strike 12 1 It 1 la Is from the pen of George GlOrge Broadhurst who has done some creditable things and it is strong possessed of clear cut characters good lines JInes striking situ situations situations and varying appeals to the emo emotions It has powerful tragedy the in interest interest terest of a struggle light touches of hu humor humor humor mor and a love Jove Interest Yet the cen central central central character Is a em embezzler embezzler You dont blame blanK him so much for that when you learn he took the money in the hope nope of saving paving Ing the tho life of ofa ofa a R beloved Invalid slates lis tel But you cant become filled with enthusiastic admira admiration tion for fol him when he slinks for Ol two acts before a blackmailing cur That IS I the great weakness of the play which with witha a little more courage thrown into the central figure would exercise a more compelling g sway swa over the audiences and could be counted as a great success The character described is taken by Monroe onroe Salisbury known to his Ills old ac acquaintances acquaintances acquaintances in Salt Lake by his real name of Orr Salisbury Cash a nephew of the late O 0 J Salisbury He did not disappoint disappoint disappoint point the most expectant of his friends Mr Salisbury has bas a voice of excellent quality which he handled with effective modulations modulation and he played the part throughout with dignity and strength His performance last evening was sufficient 1 to entitle him to recognition as an actor of oC high rank I The entire company is good especially I Oscar O car Grey Gre Briggs Driggs who takes the part of the accomplice of the leading figure and later the blackmailer It is a rather thankless role rote that of villain but Mr Ir BriggS made this villain lUain a little different from the ordinary type The furtive glance of the thief and sneak S eak was porn por portrayed to perfection and the character work throughout was of high order Inez Baird made an excellent slangy stenographer stenographer pher and the others other of the company compan were all a 11 good The Mills of the Gods runs the rest Iest of the week Despite the weakness point pointed ed out at the beginning It is a stirring and interesting play with many man gripping moments Having Hating the added attraction of a Salt Lake man as star the piece should enjoy excellent patronage through throughout out the engagement The usual ere Sunday night audience at the Orpheum last evening was treated to a program which was heartily enjoyed judging from the liberal applause which followed each act The new bill at the Orpheum is unique in that it is made up of acts so entirely different from the gen general general eral elal run of offerings at this play pIa house houseas as to be refreshing It would be impossible impossible impossible sible to tell of the bill without making special lal and ami emphatic mention of Marshall P Wilders monologue This noted hu humorist humorist and the author authol of Smiling Round the World V orld kept the audience In a continual con continual continual uproar of laughter for a quarter of an hour and only by reminding b his hearers hear hearers ers frs that he would be here a whole week weel was he enabled to gracefully leave the stage E D Coe Cae and Miss lIss Lillian Boyd Bod won many hands In their comedy corned musical creation The Musician and the Model lode Their act is a burlesque In refined re refined refined fined enjoyable en able and funny Charles Matthews performed some wonderful feats in jumping and although the act is ordinary he was liberally applauded The singing and whistling of oC Misses Nell NeU Lock Jock Lockwood Lockwood wood and Hazel Bryson kept the audience delighted and they the graciously responded respond I Ito to several encores Mr Ir and Mrs frs Tom and Charlotte Appelle presented an Irish comedy sketch which is probably as clever cleer in construction and as finished In Jn plot scenery and acting as has bas been seen at the Orpheum this season A tune tuneful tuneful tuneful ful and picturesque ensemble act Intro Introducing during entrancing music is that of the Eight Encore after encore was as demanded last evening The bill production production of the pretty southern melodrama Hearts of the Blue Ridge The play was walt given under difficulties owing to th the fact that a break in the electrical fixtures fixture threw the house in darkness about time timo for the curtain to rise and the first act was played by gaslight only The play pia did not start until The plot deals with a feud in ht the Ute heart of the Blue Ridge mountains It tells tens a story of or hate and j love of a capture and a rescue and has thrills galore Miss Charlotte as a Missie Carter Cartr and Charles LeMoyne as Bob Reynolds in the leading roles won appreciative applause as did also Harry Harr HarryJ J Kennedy In the negro role of Whit Whittaker i taker Watson be fa de wall wals There i were no waits walts between acts specialties being put on by b Miss Munderf Agnes McFarland and the Blue Ridge colored quartet Ralph Stuart began the second week of nf his engagement with the Mack MackI I company at the Bungalow last night very I auspiciously The Transgressor the play for this week eek is of the sombre type and deals with Ute the old story stat of a hard hardworking hardworking hardworking I working lovable man being driven from I his home and child by b his hta foolish Coolish wife j I who before belore her marriage was a spoiled society woman The husband an actor of I ability drinks heavily but is finally res rescued rescued rescued cued by b an actress friend and prospers while the deluded wife is murdered by bythe I f the villain for fol whom she left her husband There is considerable comedy omed to relieve r the situation and the audience was wae well with the production Mr Stuart as the wronged husband has ample I for fol the display of oC his versatility I I and he performed must most st creditably credI sp Special Special I Iclal I cial mention should be made of or the scenes I In which Mr Ir Stuart and Baby Bab Kenned Kennedy have the center of the stage Miss Han Hal did not have such an important part as she usually has hall but her acting was up to her usual high standard Miss Anna Cleveland as the unfortunate wife was seen in one of the best b st roles In which she has appeared since coming to Salt Lake and her work w was liS very satisfactory Mr Heffron as the villain of course was as asgood asgood asgood good a villain as he has lias been in Innumerable Innumerable Innumerable able roles rocs His Ills makeup in the last ac act was especially good Miss Gates Miss McNaughton and Mr lIr Alcine all did clever work The TIe management Is to be congratulated
