Show AMUSEMENTS 1 Ever since the rival rial original American productions of The Devil stirred the theatrical world managers have been bus busier busIer busier ier than busy and as a result within a afew afew afew few months more Devils have been turned loose on the theatregoing public than were ever cast ast out In the Biblical era There have hae been all kind of versions pirated and poor and all kinds of actors In the various companies mostly extremely extreme bad Some of the pirated and extremely extreme badly acted productions have hae hitherto reached Salt Lake In J fact all aU allover allover over tho the country cities and towns town to ms have been surfeited with Devils of this stripe until they are in no mood to ap appreciate appreciate predate any an production which might real really really ly hy have merit The Colonial last evening offered o red the Henry Beril W Savage S version erslon which is a translation from the original authorized by Frank FranI Molnar the Hungarian author autho It therefore has authenticity to recommend recommend recommend mend it at the start The play pIa should be Interpreted by b a thoroughly fine corn com company pany pan Unfortunately there is little to be said in favor of the company which played it last evening except that they did not absolutely destroy destro the powerful drama beyond recognition and that the troupe is probably the best which will willever willever willever ever be seen here In this play pIa Conse Consequently Consequently it behooves all persons who wish to see this sensation of the year ear to go to the Colonial this week for this is probably probably ably abl the best chance they will have in the west The Devil Is a ai l Intellectual play It Itis Itis Itis is an allegory somewhat along the vein of most of writings but without any of hideous grotesqueness and generally superior in conception of situations working out of plot and in lines The Devil while I devilishly devilish is almost real and the whole drama is natural in the depiction depiction depiction tion of the emotions The story of the play pia has been told so soman many man times recently that repetition seems unnecessary It deals with the love of an unmarried man and a married woman of their struggles to crush crasi the passion and be honorable and of the Satanic Dr Miller who creates situations and In Influences their minds so 50 that they the give themselves up to fullest selfish en enjoyment enjoyment of their illicit love The story stOl properly understood Is far from being prurient and Is told delicately in spite of or the nature of the subject It Is a tal tale talor of or a struggle st which h is going on n today to a the world over with different principals a struggle which is won or lost in pro proportion proportion portion portio to the strength shown by b the various principals in resisting the tempter It Is all aU worked out brilliantly and calls for the best talent available to give an adequate interpretation The company now playing at the tile Co Colonial Colonial Colonial lonial Is headed by Ramsey Wallace Ap Apparently Apparently Apparently he follows Henry E of he the role and gets along much better than If he had taken a poorer mod model model el It would be the easiest thing in the world to make a burlesque of the part and this Mr Ir Wallace does not do He does well enough so that one is inspired with a desire to see a really splendid actor in the title role supported by a strong cast castAs castAs castAs As for the rest of the company the greatest kindness to them Is to refrain from detailed comments The play runs the rest of ot the week Two thoroughly thorough enjoyable features of the Orpheum bill which will be presented for the remainder of the week were the trio were a surprise to the audience which was as kept in a gale of delighted laughter over their clever and artistic drawings The scene for their act shows a garden wall with seven blank spaces upon it These blank spaces are rapidly into clever dover pictures under the deft crayons of the artists and these pic plc pictures pictures tures in turn tum by b a few lightning lI strokes are changed to represent something en entirely entirely entirely different The audience leaned Jean for forward forward forward ward eagerly to see and predict what the next evolution would be and Its guesses were
