In Senator Smoots home end nd d stronghold tonight James Tames H Moyle of Salt Lake and L R Mar Martineau Martineau far chairman of the Democratic state sta te committee delivered addresses to toa toa toa a large audience in the Provo Prove opera house I The audience was wac deeply interested in the remarks of the speakers and tho th telling points made against the fellow felloe townsman of these people were ap pl with a vigor that showed there are still stin people in Utah county count who do donot donot donot not approve of the Smoot campaign The Prove Silver Cornet band made music for far the occasion and the meet ing was called to order by Alma Van I Wagener chairman of the city Demo Democratic Democratic Democratic cratic committee Mr Van Yan Wagener introduced W M 1 Roylance Rolance as chairman of the meeting Mr lr Roylance spoke very briefly He said the time had come to end the strife and turmoil of which th the people of the state are very yer tired and anti that in the Democratic party part lay the only hope of peace He then introduced Mr Moyle The Th Salt SaIt Laker began by saying that it was as his hope that the Democratic party shall shaU stand standa as it has always stood for progress development and peace The time had come said th t thiL speaker when alien men should be elected on account of or their political principles not because they the were bosses in politics or because they had influence outside of politics Fast Favorites of Republicans The Republicans when they the came into power in this state said Mr Moyle elected Cannon and Brown to the United States senate sanate Mr Cannon is a now a leader of o the American party part and Mr Brown is js bitterly fight ing the Republican machine Then the Republicans ns looked around for the rich richest richest richest est man in the state stat for one whose hose wealth could be used in the corruption of the voters of the state Finding that they the t had not made p Jl success In that they hey looked to the church to find finda a man holding an ecclesiastical office off E the prestige and influence of which could be used to further the interest of the Republican party part What ha has been the result of the election of an apostle of the dominant dominan t church to the United States senate It has resulted in an investigation in agi agitation tation tion that has brought the state into disrepute I have never said that the gentleman was responsible himself for this agitation but I do say sa that his ac In politics is responsible for the conditions which exist in Utah today I have respect for Senator Smoot moot in his place but I say the time has ha come in Utah when men must stand upon their own merits and political principles shall rule is Politician Above Criticism j I No one would be more opposed than myself to denying to any man enjoy enjo ment of his rights But has the day come corne in Utah when we cannot discuss a man who offers himself for a political position If he stands high in th Uw church shall he wear a robe of sanctity SQ sp that he cannot be as freely discussed as Judge Powers Judge King or air Mr Howell The senior senator from Utah with the prestige of his ecclesias office has a tremendous tage over any other oth r political possibility and when he goes into politics he should be on the same plane with other ical aspirants I can C conceive that there might have been a time when an apostle might have been needed in con congress congress gress gres but he should stand there upon his merits as a citizen and not other otherwise othErwIse otherwise I wise I know the appeal has been made and is being made that the Mor Mormon Mormon mon people should rally to the support of this gentleman and should protect his personal interests There has grown grownup grownup up In this state a class of people who do dono no come to the surface but who go about ab u f the state whispering whisper ing lug They The called are very enO appropriately They The whisper that the interests in of the church demand the sup port of Smoot Bugaboo of Disfranchisement One of the most absurd boasts that has been made is that Democratic suc sue success success cess means the disfranchisement of the people of this state stat I seen the slightest of evidence of this danger they suggest It is merely a bugaboo that the Republican machine has been raising Unless they are checked in their mad career what will they do don next n I charge the Republicans with producing the conditions existing e in inthis inthis inthis this state and there is no way wa out except by removing the bossism that exists here What has given the American Am rican party reasons for fOt existence Has it not grown out of the agitation over our senior senator Mr Moyle declared that permanent peace and progress progress could only be in insured insured insured by placing the Democrats in charge He said that the Republicans had a habit h bit of injecting an extraneous issue into every campaign One A Mil MU Milton Milton MUton ton Musser has been selected to inject new issues into this campaign if there ever was a base conglomeration or o 0 falsehood it is found in that letter said Mr lIr Moyle Delegation Not Influential I He showed that the appointment to federal officers o ers in this state wore were not always alays made on the advice of the Utah congressional delegation citing the ap appointment appointment of E B Critchlow as a special counsel in the coal land prosecution a Colorado man as bank examiner e amin er after a Utah man had been indorsed by the delegation He also said that the Democratic plank in the Demo Democratic Democratic Democratic cratic national platform relative to po was practically the same as the Utah constitution covering the same subject Ct Mr Moyle said tha he Dem Dern DemI Continued on Page 2 Jf CRITICISE SMOOT IN HOME TOWN TO JN Continued from Page 1 had bad always been the friend of Mormons citing the fight made by Sen Son Senator Senator ator Call CaB and Brown Wilson Wison Sunset Cox and others oters to prevent the federal federl regulation of Utah affairs in territorial territorial rial days das He closed cosed with wih a complimentary complimentary reference to Judge Powers Judge of the state ticket ticket and to the Utah county Democratic ticket Chairman Roylance then introduced Mr Martineau Mr Martin eau asked ed any anyone one in the audience audi nce to show him one good thing ting the Republicans have have done for this state during the th eleven years ears they have been in power He said sid they tey had elected Tom Toni Kearns who did not know kow a continent from an Isi island island and and told some humorous stories relative to the former senators senator s attain attainments attainments ments He said the Republicans ment sd na nationally nationally had started to fight Utah in 1856 1556 at at their first national convention You cant tell me said Mr lIr Marti Martineau lIart Martineau neau neau that any letter Jetter from A Milton Musser will win lift a Mormon up from here and nd set him down over there I believe beleve weve been pared and and peeled down until we have a lineup of the petrified Democracy Mr Martineau closed with wih a discussion of the tariff issue that tat included some striking illus illustrations ius illustrations of the injustice worked on the te consumer by the tariff tax Judge spoke last As to Musser Said he There is a man who ho is in Salt Lake who enjoys the euphonious name of Musser lusser and God knows he mussed his own nest when he wrote that letter leter the other day day Whatever Musser has claimed as to authority he heis heis heis is absolutely by the te church organs assurance that every ever man and woman who is a member of the te dom dominant domInant dominant church is absolutely free to ex cx exercise exercise the franchise exactly as he or 01 she sees fit ft You dont need advice from the News you OU dont need advice from fromA A Milton Miton Musser and I want to see you who will wi submit to such dictations as the Musser letter Jetter get out of the te par party part party ty t for you have no business in the Dem Democratic Democratic party part The Democratic party teaches independence and freedom of thought I believe the integrity of the voters voter of this state will wi stand a far severer test than a thousand letters leters from A Milton Miton Musser The meeting closed with wih a few addi additional additional tonal remarks from Mr Martineau by way of a postscript in which he told something about Smoots interference in inthe inthe inthe the last Democratic campaign in Salt Sal Lake City Smoots 1905 Butt But In Democrats generally in Provo both bot Mormons and Gentile that they would go to the te polls and vote the Dem Democratic Democratic ticket if 1000 Milton Mussers thundered against them Other Demo Democrats crt also als talked hopefully and ad the enthusiasm manifested at the meeting tonight soWs that the party will at least give a good go d account of itself US f in this county count at the te polls next month |
