Show REIGN OF TERROR VISITS Citizens Excited Over Incendiary Incendiary Incendiary diary Fires and Burglaries Bad Men at Work Excitement verging on a reign of f ter terror terror nor existed in Og Ogden n Saturday night when three th ec fires all of incendiary origin and four attempted burglaries occurred within three hours Both the fire com corn companies companies were called out and for more than two hours were busy fighting three fires One of ot the fires ires was the stockade and patrol wagon house which adjoins the central police station The fire which was evidently started by gasoline caused great excitement at the station while whilo the department was at two other fires tires Both firemen and policemen attending tho the fires are strong in their opinion that all were started by some of the thc thugs who were wert arrested Thursday night on the charge of vagrancy but were given glen orders to get out or of town by Judge Murphy on Fri Friday Friday day morning Another theory is advanced that the thc fires tires were the result of con concerted concerted action on the part of members of ofa ofa ofa a very tough gang of thugs infesting Og Ogden Ogden Ogden den at the present pre nt time and who did the work for the purpose of being able to have a clear field for their burglary op operations operations operations while the policemen and firemen were at the fires The city is overrun with criminals and undesirables who have been driven out of ofSan ofSan ofSan San Francisco Denver and Salt Lake There have been several cases reported of certain saloons on street shielding and protecting many tough characters In the fires last night the loss will probably reach and but for the prompt action of the department would have been four times that amount Four large draft horses were destroyed In two of the fires tires In the afternoon the depart department department department ment was called to the pickle factory where a small shed was destroyed destroy d Tho The loss is nominal At in the evening the department was called to Eccles lumber yard where a large barn was blazing The fire spread from the barn to a lumber shed and two piles of shingles In the barn were ten ton horses all of which were turned loose and driven out One of the horses homes broke loose from the bunch and ran back into the burning building and was destroyed The loss at the lumber yard will reach 2500 While hUe the department was working at atthe atthe atthe the lumber blaze a call came In from the barn of the California bakery on Wall Vall avenue between and streets Wagons from depart department department ment meat No 2 also from the central sta station station tion Uon were sent to that fire Here three horses several tons of hay a buggy and several sets of harness were lost The barn and horses were the property of Henry J who said that upon ar arriving riving home he started for tor the barn to lock the door He noticed a small light In the barn and started toward it When within feet teet of it a blaze shot up that completely enveloped the barn He threw the stable door open and tried to drive drle the horses homes out but could not do so He saved two delivery wagons and a number of implements When the Ue department ar arrived arrived rived the tho barn and a number of adjoin adjoining adjoinIng ing lag sheds were in flames Before the work here had hd been b n finished another er call was received d from tram the police pollee station that the stockade was on tire fire Both Doth depart departments departments ments meats turned their attention toward that locality and SOOn apon had bad tho the flames under control The loss will not exceed 00 While the departments were at the two fires tires the police were called out clear across town to investigate a number of attempted burglaries Later in the even evenIng evenIng evening Ing they also made several trips to out outlying outlying lying districts where a number of at attempted attempted attempted tempted burglaries were reported Up to toan toan toan an early hour this morning no successful burglaries s had been committed and no arrests had been made |
