Show OffER TO TEST LIGHT SYSTEM I Present resent Company Issues Statement Stat ment in Explanation of Proposal to t Council URGES EXTREME CAUTION ADVISES AGAINST CHANGE WITHOUT INVESTIGATION O 0 A Honnold electrical engineer of othe the Light Railway company has is issued Issued sued a statement in explanation of ot the proposition submitted by b the company to the council Monday evening to meet the offer of the Weisbach company in the themi mi tier of ot street lighting The statement follows It Is a fact that Salt Lake City has f 1 larger blocks and und wider streets and with probably more shade trees than any other city and herein heeln he eln lies the difficult problem for the city to get sufficient lighting Also with the poles in the middle of the streets and lamps set up on top of the intersecting poles at a great height above the street the height and method of hanging lamp in the hood fixed by t th city it Is impossible to throw the light up VP and down the street without the seri serf serious otis ous OIl interference of poles casting long dark shadows This condition we have realized and our new plans being worked out disallow anymore nn any more poles polus being placed In the mid middle middle middie dle die of the streets str ets All new poles are be being being beIng ing set on curb lines or inside the blocks VC point now with pride to South Tem Tern Temple TemIe rie Ie and nd Second avenue the latter just completed with lamps suspended out over the street where they the properly belong A clear view can be had at night from one end to the other on each of these streets The city authorities particularly the city engineer and board of public works understand full well weIl from our many dis discussions of our plans that we Intend to change all streets thus and ultimately get every pole out of the middle The Tho city will particularly encourage this by continuation of present activity In Im Improvement Improvement Improvement provement work Better Service Assured The question was raised at the last meeting of the council committee as to the past Interruptions to street lighting service We Wc make no excuses but our present plans of ot new steam power and other Improvements to stations and lines will eliminate this and ond we will be able to give reliable and steady lighting ser service vice Ice fee That we may have the opportunity to tomake tomake tomake make good with the city and continue the present system of ot arc are lighting or put in a better system of distribution if it itcan Itcan itcan can be worked out we propose the fol following following following lowing Make a counter f to meet the present scheme of ot the com corn company compan pany pan panTo To install two blocks of series street lamps which system Is manufactured manufactured manufactured by the Westinghouse Electric com corn company company pany and conceded to be much more efficient and to give more candle power than the lamp and with the light better distributed over the area to tobe tobe tobe be illuminated To install two blocks of General Elec Electric Electric trie new type of ot Tungsten street lamp which light will also give more candle power and better distribution than the Weisbach To Install two blocks of lights as per the proposition already made by the company I IThe The present lamps to be taken out of the immediate vicinity where the above lights are arc placed All three of the above are approximately equivalent systems j Installation I Is Free We e will make the installation of the two types of electric lamps at no cost to toI toI I the city and will place the posts wherever wherever wherever I ever they will wUl designate for trial The J as proposed by company will wUl be connected up at no cost to the city elt If Jr the Weisbach company will fur furnish furnIsh furnish nish the same The lamps may be left up three or four weeks or until the city councilmen and the public can make full Inspection and comparison of ot the three different types of ot illumination We would suggest that the city have an en expert illuminating engineer make comparisons of the three systems With the th above trial scheme carried out the city elt may adopt which of ot the three is best or continue the present system tern tem t m as may be determined A careful study stud can be made of the relative value of illumination for the money expended that Is which system gives most light md nd best distribution to suit the condi conditions conditions conditions Names the Figures We Ve propose e to install either of the new nw electric systems for 30 per light per year anywhere In the city where we have our lines Jines at present ent and that means all allover allover allover over The gas lamps as proposed by W Wels s stach bach tach company we ve will light wherever our cur ur gas mains exist at present and under Eime specifications and guarantees as contained In proposition already submit submitted tel ted to the th city We Ye will furnish these at ato o per light per year We Ve believe that It is only fair fall to the city for us to make the above offer to Install the trial system so that no mis mistake tike take will be made and the city be paying out cut more money for tor an Inferior lighting system Test Is Proposed If Ie the city will accept the above aboe plan to have the comparative test made m de no mistake need be made and it should be possible to get a system at least as good goodas as the present one for no more expendi expenditure expendIture expenditure ture than now costing the city It is unfair to the city to make a con a change from the present sya I tem tern of lighting to any other until it has las been thoroughly tried out by such a test testas testas testas as proposed above aboe We e offer our engineering force or will obtain any outside talent if required in making such a test as will satisfy the city on this proposition o 0 A RONNOLD HONNOLD
