Show THE WAIL OF A DYING RAT FOLLOWING F its threat directed at the merchants of the city that unless they support the deal it would continue indefinitely its campaign of slander and defamation which is doing Utah so much harm the Salt Lake Trib Tribune Tribune Tribune une yesterday morning in a first page article served notice upon the saloon men of Salt Lake that they must contribute to the Tribune cause and vote the Tribune ticket or they will be thrown out of business after fter election If this means anything else we do not understand English Here is what they say Americans must meet this issue with courage The liquor dealer who insists on perniciously injecting himself into politics should not receive a license In fact a license should be granted contingent among other things on the holder thereof refraining from using his in influence influence influence fluence at the will of managers of political campaigns To the end that the people be he fully acquainted with the methods employed by the political in politics every good citizen should make it a point to make a memorandum of the pernicious activity of this element next nest Tuesday and report it to the Tribune THERE ARE ARB ISSUES IN THIS CAMPAIGN AIGN THAT WILL NOT END WITH THE CLOSING OF or THE POLLS If that is not a club that is to be used in driving the into line for the Tribune ticket what is it If it is not serving notice upon them that they must come through with money and with influence for the Tribune ticket tomorrow what does it meant mean T If it does not mean that any saloonkeeper who opposes the Tribune ticket will win find himself without a licenses licence what does oes it mean If it does not mean that people are asked to carry to the Tribune information that will serve as a check up on the saloon men what does it mean When the Tribune says in i 1 capital letters that there are issues in this campaign that will not end with the closing of the polls is that not a threat to the saloon men Does it not mean pay up and vote right The Tribune has absolutely dictated the policy of the American party city council towards the saloons for five years In that time the number of saloon licenses has increased Several times each year the Tribune has advocated a more stringent stringent stringent gent liquor ordinance Each time before the date to grant licenses came around the Tribune talked about decreasing those thos licenses The licenses were never decreased and the stringent ordinances were not passed or they were not enforced by a Tribune chief of police Why then all this talk It is merely for the purpose of graft A copy of the Tribune was delivered yesterday at every saloon s l on in in Salt Lake Today a collector will win go around and get any amount of money mone Y that he can scare the into intong giving ng Will that money go g o into the American party campaign fund 1 It will not It will go to the Tribune office and into the coffers of that paper It will be used to defray the Tribune deficit The Tribune has not made a dollar profit since Joe Lipmann left its management It has been run on money grafted from the gamblers and the saloon men who feared the power of the paper as the dominant force in the city council l and the mayors office It has been simply a question of paying the Tribune or going out of business It is a pure JUre case c se of graft and every saloon man in Salt Lake who read the Tribune yesterday knows blows that he lie has to pay today There is no escape for him When Fernie Pernie Fernstrom the messenger at Democratic state headquarters introduced in the city council some days das ago agoa a resolution favoring the decrease in m the number of licenses The said that the resolution had come from the Tribune office Yesterday the Tribune followed it up with its swinging of the club It used as its tool Fernie Fern Fem Fernstrom FernStrom strom who some months ago made certain charges against Mayor Bransford in the city council and had to swallow them later and spread his apology on the city records If it were not criminal it would be amusing to see the Tribune talking about opposing saloons when the candidate it most openly favored for the city council one year ago has two retail liquor licenses and a wholesale license is the chief force in the city council just now is one of the chief leaders of the Tribune party and its trusted in council Do you suppose that man wants the number of liquor licenses reduced IF THE TRIBUNE IS SO ANXIOUS TO HAVE THE LIQUOR BUSINESS PURIFIED LET IT TELL THE PEOPLE OF THE THAT WAS W AS GRAFTED FROM FRO I THE TEE BREWERS AND LIQUOR MEN ONE YEAR AGO JUST BEFORE THE CAMPAIGN CilIP AIGN FOR MAYOR OPENED The money was collected by four Tribune party y leaders One pf them deposited it in a bank to his credit and it was to tobe tobe be used at t tto the city election But the wrong candidate was nominated it suit the man who had the money deposited to his credit The Tribune inner circle had promised its support to a certain candidate then threw it to McMillan M and later to Bransford The man with the then refused to allow it to be used and it is still in the bank in his name And al although although though the money mone would come in handy hand he lie dont dare use it because it was gotten by extortion and it might get him and his partners into trouble Let the Tribune tell us about that if it is so anxious aILious to print something about the saloon business But the Hie saloon men did not seem seron frightened yesterday They Th y know it is the usual Tribune bluff They have seen the Tribune do that for five years yet their business has prospered They The know the Tribune Trib ne party has lIas no intention of decreasing decreasing decreasing ing the number of licenses and the Tribune let the party do it if the party 1 desired it A i decrease in the number of saloon licenses would decrease the Tribune graft aft Not No the saloon men know that if they pay the Tribune collector today that is the last they will hear of the matter until the Tribune needs money once more when it will all aU be gone solemnly over again How long do the people of Salt Lake mean to stand for this sort of thing The Tribune threat yesterday was the wail of a dying rat lat It is beaten to a pulp and knows it |
