occasions that he believed that there t ere was a deal between the mem members members members bers of the Utah congressional delegation Republicans and the liquor interests He based his Ins belief so he said in his Logan speech on the alleged fact that there had been no answer to a telegram sent to that congressional delegation in January 1909 demanding statewide prohibition and signed by C W Nibley Hyrum M Smith and Nephi L Morris Monis Mr Roberts said that as there was no answer there must have been a deal The next day after that Logan speech of Monday night The asked each of these three men whether there had been an answer to their telegram C W Nibley said YES IN BEHALF OF THE UTAH DELEGATION AN ANSWER WAS SENT AND RE RECEIVED RECEIVED RECEIVED Hyrum M Smith said HE SENATOR REED SMOOT DID MOST CERTAINLY Y ANSWER THE TELEGRAM Nephi L Morris Monis said YES THERE WAS AN ANSWER RECEIVED It became then a question of veracity between these three men and Mr Roberts Whom shall the public believe Mr Roberts accused reputable men of selling their honor and he admitted when he voiced the accusation that he had no proof Is he then the sort of o a man that should be believed against the word of Nibley Smith and Morris Monis The feels no hesitancy in saying that it believes these three men in preference to Mr Roberts and it believes that most people will take the same view of the situation Caught in his own trap Mr Roberts corresponding secretary Jim Moyle in order to break the effect of these three mens statement has offered two rewards aggregating 1000 for a sight of the answer of that famous telegram The telegram sent by Nibley Smith and Morris Monis to the members of the Utah congressional delegation was apparently apparently apparently a private telegram The scalawag that stole the telegram from its owners for use at headquarters should be employed to go back and steal the answer He would probably do the job for a sum considerably under the 1000 reward that is offered The never saw the telegram which Nibley Smith and Morris sent to the congressional dele delegation i gation It seems to have been a private telegram The first time it was ever produced in public so far as this paper is aware was when Mr Roberts read it to his l s Logan audience last Monday night Just who secured it and gave it to Mr Roberts we wedo wedo wedo do not know Perhaps Mr Roberts knows and perhaps the gentleman who secured the telegram for the use of headquarters can get him the answer The knows no more about the first telegram than what Mr Roberts said about it publicly and it knows no more about the answer than what was told to its reporter by Nibley Smith and Morris It has the word of Mr Roberts that there was a telegram and it has the word of the three men named that not only was there a telegram but that there was an answer and that answer was received 0 This matter of the telegram is up to Mr Roberts on the one side and Mr Nibley Mr Smith and Mr Morris on the other These latter three men sent a private telegram and received a private answer If they choose to give out the answer for publication The will give space to that answer as it al always always always ways does to any matter of public interest It is the word of Smith Nibley Hibley and Morris against the word of Mr Roberts As these three men were most con concerned concerned concerned in the transaction as the senders of the telegram they really ought to know whether there was an answer Even if Mr Roberts were disposed d to tell the truth about it which frankly we very much doubt his opportunity for having the information information information mation would hardly be as good as that of the three men most concerned The care much about the telegram one way or another and is interested only in one particular lar Roberts said he was for statewide prohibition because there had been a deal with the liquor interests He said there was wasa a deal because there had not been an answer to that famous telegram The three men who sent the th telegram assured The that there had been an answer Since the Roberts logic was based upon no answer and THERE WAS AN ANSWER it was inevitable that his logic should fall because based upon a misstatement a false premise and therefore his ground for believing that there was a deal disappeared We felt sure that when Mr Roberts read the statements from these men that he would admit that he was wrong that his logic was false and that he lie would have to withdraw his statement that there was a deal because he no longer believed it having no basis for such belief 0 Either Mr Roberts will have to do what we have outlined or he will have to go down in the history of the state as a de deliberate deliberate deliberate liberate falsifier a deliberate publisher of wilful untruths or he will have to declare that he does not believe Mr J Mr Smith and Mr Morris If he takes this latter attitude The has no doubt these three men will be able to cross that bridge when they come to it It is their private affair and this paper has a constitutional objection to attending to the business of someone else It respectfully refers that policy to Mr Roberts as one worthy or of emulation but apparently impossible for him And in the meantime The would again suggest to Jim Moyle to drop his correspondence for the Salt Lake Tribune and hire the same scalawag that stole the telegram to steal the answer It would probably be much under 1000 that is if Moyle is really thirsting for a sight of it apt Selecting a Piano sa sais J 1 iL is i
