Show DIVINE SUGGESTS WHIPPING POST Dr F B Short Advocates Stern Remedy to Cure Carnival of Crime WANTS MORE POLICEMEN HE DECLARES JURIES ARE OF OFTEN OFTEN OFTEN TEN TOO LENIENT Our Carnival of ot Crime was waa the sub subject subject subject of the sermon of Dr Francis Bur Burgette getto gotto Short in the First Methodist church last night In the course of his hia sermon he said quoting from Exodus 2112 He that a man so that ho he die shall be surely put to death The uThe Bible is IB the tho most marvelous among books because it springs from the heart of righteousness The fath fatherhood fatherhood of God evidences that God has a 0 fatherly concern for his every child Therefore the ten commandments and andall andaU andall all aU the Just jus principles of government have hae sprung The same principles that were good goodin in the days of Moses are good for to today today today day Life is sacred and God has hedged It about with the greatest possible care but there are those that disregard every law la that makes for the protection of ot life This community has been stirred to its very depths time and time again indeed there seems to be no end to the carnival of ot crime that is being carried on in this community This city is the place for every bad man that crosses the continent He stops here hero hereto hereto to replenish his purse nurse at whatever cost The crimes that are aro committed here are not by residents of the state Two Judges informed me yesterday that of the persons committed to the peni penitentiary only twentysix were citizens of Utah and on this Warden Pratt agrees This business of leniency with these traveling criminals should be dis discontinued discontinued discontinued continued and I suggest a method for eliminating very much of ot the theft bur burglary burglary burglary glary larceny and wife beating that are committed in this state Suggests Whipping Post Back in old Delaware from where I came we have there a lady we call Black Susan who stands in each county and to her all cases canes of petty larceny theft and burglary are re referred referred referred the tho culprit being obliged to pay for his crime by his arms around the old lady and receiving a specified number of lashes from a 1 whip wielded by a man Such has hall reduced the above crimes in Dela Delaware Delaware Delaware ware and it would do it here But I Iam Iam Iam am sure that in suggesting this you call me heartless and cruel However it would not only reduce the number of crimes committed but would also save the taxpayer from paying the board of ot ofa ota ofa a large number of criminals in our state institutions Just think of our Jails and penitentiaries penitentiaries being filled with boarders for whom the taxpayers must put up their cash rather than have these undesirables undesirables bles at large in the community What care they for a term in prison and the punishment that is meted out outto outto outto to them Are they not released and shadowed to be again apprehended for tor fora tora a like or worse crime Law breakers must be punished and that punishment must be commensurate with the infraction of the law Society must be protected against the ravages of this worthless workless shiftless migra migratory migratory migratory tory highhanded handed band of or thugs and rob robbers robbers bers bern and murderers The law therefore must lay its cold Iron grip upon them and coerce them to obedience The good warden of our penitentiary penitentIal Informs me that the are eleven murderers mur murderers serving a life liCe sentence sent nce eleven Inno Innocent Innocent innocent cent lives ba have been struck ruck s down by men whose only contribution to society has I been crime but worse than that it means that eleven cleven men have lost sight of ot the sanctity of ot life and again It means that the very Or heart of the law of Utah and the righteousness of ot God have hae been stabbed to the very heart Is there no remedy for this Must this city and this state con continue continuo continue to pour out their tears and to shed their blood because of these theSEl desperadoes There is a remedy for our carnival of crime First I 1 would suggest that our city fathers Increase our police force rath rather er than to continue If necessary the lay layIng layIng layIng Ing of more mOle miles of streets with asphalt asphaltum urn um and macadam The reputation of our city Is more enhanced by protection to human life and personal property than Itis It ItIs Is by boasting of street Improvements and high buildings At present our force Is u entirely toe to inefficient because it is too small emall It would be ba better to Increase our policemen p than to continue many of ot the improvements that are now under way I would also suggest that our city fathers fathera direct our detectives which force should be enlarged and made more efficient to shadow every ever auspicious character that comes Into the city The police and de dc detective detective forces are always subject to criticism cism sometimes very ery Justly so especially with relation to the last murder that took place here Two men told me that our chief c of detectives was informed that a robbery was going to be committed by the suspects who later committed murder In addition to the robbery I asked the chief about the story and he said that tha t no such information had been brought to him but that he had some suspicion of at these men and at once went to the rooming house where they were located Again I would suggest that our Juries would permit the law to take its course in these most aggravated cases that the des den desperado desperado thief and the murderer shall feel that this city Is no place for tor them to en engage engage engage gage in their business He that a man so that he die shall surely be put putto putto putto to death Finally the law must take its course else the people will take the law In their own hands and commit a crime for tor which this community does not care to stand It was a sad talk to me rue when I heard I some days ago that tha t some prisoners had been removed to the state stab penitentiary ry because of the formation of a mob that had determined to do the very thing which all good citizens should oppose God pity the poor unfortunate men who have lost Jost all feeling for the sanctity of life Ufe and the regard for law liberty and Justice n |
