longest tunnels are Indicated a ad d in a graphic representation they the are arC necessarily ne ril drawn dra I out of proportion in the matter of length I That engineering feats hitherto con marvelous are no longer re regarded regarded as ae such uch and that the construe construction construct tion t on of a great railroad Is a simple problem to engineering experts exerts ac erts is well Illustrated In the building of the West Western Western Western ern Pacific railroad through a terri tern territory tory tor in which a few faw years ago railroad construction would have been consid considered considered considered ered folly telly The one on question consid considered considEred ered cred by b the engineers In the tica tic work of the Western Pacific Is conr my of operation Expense e of op operation option tion must be reduced to a minimum Ti i i matter what obstacles the construe ton tron tj engineers must overcome to ac acc ace c e his result In Its entire distance from Salt Lake t to San Francisco the maximum grade gradei rade i 1 i 1 per cent This remarkable feat is isa Isa a by b having the railroad grade gradt through the Sierra Nevadas at atan atan atan an elevation 2000 feet lower than that of the Southern Pacific by cutting tine fie grade Into the rocky sides of can lan and through passes hitherto con considered considered considered inaccessible Where There there is no open pass through the mountains the engineers have not hesitated to bore long tunnels through the rather than to Increase the grade and the distance nce by going over the mountains or making wide detours Within another year It is announced the Western Pacific will be entirely completed The western terminal of the line constructed to date Is twelve miles west of ot Bews Nev e and the grade for the line is almost entirely completed One of ot the most Important engineer engineering ing feats on the entire line Is the bor boring borIng boring ing of the Flower lake tunnel on the Salt Lake division miles west Of Salt Lake This Is feet long and offers one of ot the th most difficult difficult difficult cult engineering problems on the entire line The work on this tunnel Is near nearing nearIng nearing ing completion and will be finished in inJune InJune inJune June This done the completion of the theline theline theline line from Salt Lake to Elko will be a simple matter and If It the work is pushed the line will be completed into Elko by fall Call As soon as this stretch of road is finished regular trains will undoubtedly be operated from Salt Lake to Elko The tunnels in the Western Pacific and there are approximately fifty tift im important Important ni tunnels are all uniform in con construction construction seventeen feet In width wl th be between between between tween the vertical sides of Qt the tunnel and and a half halt feet In InI height making the normal cross see sec section I tion of the tunnel square feet fee The Thc Immensity of the undertaking In con constructing construCting one of these tunnels may ay be understood when It Is known that to bore the Flower lake tunnel cubic feet of solid roCk must be re removed removed removed moved and to build the Spring Garden Gar Garden Gardt den dt n tunnel In the western slope of the Sierras In California there must be betaken betaken betaken taken out cubic feet of earth and rock The Spring Garden tunnel Is the longest tunnel on the new line It II is feet in length Another tunnel of ot great Importance on the Western Vestern Pacific Is the Chilkoot tunnel through the famous Beckwith pass on the line This tunnel Is feet long piercing the Sierras at one of the most hazard hazardous ous points The Beckwith pass was traveled In ln the early days by b the gold seekers but of late years has been con considered considered considered inaccessible It was necessary n to go through the Beckwith pass to preserve the minimum grade and arid for this reason the Chilkoot tunnel was de decided decided decided upon Some of ot the most unexpected and se serious serious serious rious problems in tn railroad construction encountered by the engineers of ot the Western Pacific were presented pres by the treacherous tr mountain torrents of or the Sierra Nevada These torrents are con constantly constantly finding minding new channels and rush rushing rushing ing down the mountain sides with ter terrific terrific terrific force at unexpected times of the year ear earThe The floods of this section of the coun country country try to a year ear ago were the most serious of any an since white man had been In the region The high water mark on the tho sides of or the mountains was raised two feet This Impressed the engineers with the necessity of making the road roadbed roadbed roadbed bed as stable as possible For this rea reason reason reason son the idea of ot having wooden trestles was abandoned and concrete was used exclusively The high water mark es established es established last March larch was taken as a standard and the roadbed so construct that the floods will have to be much more violent than they have been here heretofore heretofore heretofore to affect the roadbed All cul culverts culverts vents verts verts are being so built as to discharge water under any head that could arise without injury to the culverts or the embankments are being provided to care for tor the debris In order to prevent the culverts from being choked The engineering work on the Western Pacific is under the direction of Virgil I C Bogue Bogus first vice president and chief I engineer His principal assistant en engineer engineer engineer is H M McCartney who has his headquarters at San Francisco T TJ TJ TJ J Wyche has hag charge of the construction
