About fifty members of the Manu Manufacturers Manufacturers Merchants association were present at the organizations first semiannual semi semiannual annual meeting last evening It Was held in the Knights of Columbus hall hail hallin in the JennIngs block President Orson i H Hewlett presided The meeting was called to order at President President dent Hewlett explained the business which would be discussed at the meet meeting meeting ing g and then presented the following re Dort Report of President The report of the president Orson n H Hewlett told of the formation of the as assocIation association on Dee Dec 1 1905 and its objects which were to stimulate business in inCrease increase Crease the number of factories encourage those already established and to unite the different sections ot of the state by bringing the people Into closer business relations The D need was felt of arous arousing arousing ing at home and Abroad a greater great inter interest interest est in unbounded resources indus industries Industries tries and natural advantages Desirable quarters had been secured in inthe inthe the Eagle block and the association had been fortunate in securing the services of nf Orvin Morris as traffic manager Through his efforts a number of concessions conces had been secured and others were probable Mr attended the Trans Mississippi Freight association meeting at Denver recently and explained the conditions con Hons here and his work Is expected to hip in the much needed revision of the freight rates for Salt Lake The report further says In conne connection Uon with his other work Mr Morris has checked up a large number of freight ight bills for different members of the which has resulted in the railroads refunding considerable money on association was first formed Fought Parcels Post Some time ago the p parcels post bill was before congress There was a very deter determined determined mined effort on the part of man many people tn have It passed at this session and had hadit it become a law it would have meant un untold untold told injury to the west and would have buIlt up the bIg mall mail order houses of the great eastern centers at t the expense of the western merchants Under its pro prot t cents would pay the cost of de delivering delivering livering eleven pounds of merchandIse and this would mean ruInation to hun hundreds hundreds of western merchants Our asso association dation took the matter up promptly with our lur representative and senators and the matter has been postponed for this session ses sinn sion at least When it was rumored that the troops were ert to be removed from Fort Douglas which would mean the takIng away of annually from our merchants we took the matter up with our senators a and nd we ha have oe the assurance from Wash Washinton Washington inton ington that It is Intention to make this a perm nent army center and that the sol soldiers soldiers diers which have been taken awa away will be replaced b by other troops To Remedy Coal Shortage During the coal famine last wInter our business houses as well as our residences suffered for want of coal and iii a num number her ber of cases larger factories wore were almost a compelled to close down entirely In or order dt der r to remedy this evil the association took the matter Up and the big coal companies com have conceded a storage rate ot of 50 cents per ton ThIs will do much to al alleviate alleviate any suffering next winter but sun still it would not be an unWise step for those who can do so to put in a supply of oal during the summer that will wUl carry them through the cold months of winter The matter of fake advertisIng has been d dealt alt with and a satisfactory solution me made e The time of our merchants is not wasted by fake Cake advertisIng rs and their money Is not spent In ad ath erUs ing sch schemes mes from which they cannot ps derive any benefit and the money whIch was paid to eastern flyby nyby nights who only stopped with us long enough to get our cash Is now paid to legitimate home advertisers A joint meeting was held with the Butchers Grocers association and the tue Federated Trades These organizations manifested the most friendly spirit and andare andare are now working In harmony with us for forthe forthe the betterment of trade conditions here For Joint Exhibit Although we have a fine exhibit room and some splendid displays we feel that the greatest good can be accomplished consolidating the dIsplays of the different organIzations of the state and making one fine large exhibit To this end we have met with the D A M lL society and the Real Estate assocIatIon and a consolidation con consolidation ot of the exhibits ot of these asso Is one of the probabilities of the near future The newspapers have gIven us their loyal support We appreciate their fine work and realize that without their sup support support port we could not have accomplished what has been done We are preparing a little pamphlet on the Industries of Utah whIch will contain the names of all the members of the as association association This little book will go into every home so that the people will know what goods are being produced here and people who are making and selling them We have also Issued offIcial stamps for Utah goods which have been tested and found to be of high qualIty The manu manufacturers manufacturers who have not already obtained them can get them by having their goods tested and makIng application to the as assocIation association for the stamps The stamps have been made in two sizes and goods bearing them are recommended to the consumer by the association SpecIal mention should be made Ot Of Gordon H Place our manager who has been alive and active from the first and hIs excellent publicity work Is especially worth of commendation At the conclusion of Mr talk the report of the treasurer Charles CharlesO O 0 HarrIs was read This showed that the organization is prospering and has hasa a snug balance on hand A vote cf thanks was extended to the officers of the organIzation for tor theIr work during durin the first half year of activity The meeting was then thrown open to the members Fr F J Alexander spoke enthusIastically of the benefits that have accrued to a large number of the merchants and manufacturers who are members of the association as well as asto asto to the business pUblic at large as a result re result sult of the publicity work done Commercial Com Commercial mercial travelers representing Utah houses admit that much trade is be beIng beIng Ing kept at home and that Utah houses are getting a great proportion of the business than ever before This is at attributed attributed by them to the home Industry agitation conducted by the association Need Interurban Lines David O 0 Wooley former assistant city attorney called attention to the great good that would accrue to Salt Lake and aU all the surrounding cities If interurban roads are built He moved that a committee be appointed to secure data relative to the field that may be covered by such roads centering in Salt Lake and to get into touch with the promoters who have taken the matter up and urge them to immediate ac action action tion Speaking to this motion he called attention at attention to the fact that many of the newspapers In the country towns k knock ock these propositions and thus brEak confidence on the part of invest investors investors ors injuring theIr own towns President President dent Hewlett appointed Mr Willey chairman or of the committee together with F J Alexander A H Cook C O 0 Harris and H A McCollom The bad condition ot of the streets of Salt Lake was discussed by a num number number ber or of the members who asserted that greater attention should be paid to beautifying and caring for the streets throughout the city A resolution was adopted endorsing the efforts of the civIc league eague to secure the beautification of the
