Show TALKS TO THE ENGINEERS J r F Sturgis of Hartford Conn Tells How to Avoid Tax Ex Explosions Boiler BoUer explosions and smoke were two subjects upon which J F Sturgis spoke last Jast night before an audience of sta stationary stationary engine rs in the K of P hall 3 South Main street The lecture was Illus Illustrated by a set of slides shown through a stereopticon machine According to Mr lIr Sturgis the best manner in which to prevent the explosIon of boilers is the employment of compe compa competent tent ent men who will wIlI exercise the utmost care in the handling of the boilers bollers over which they preside The proper live for smoke he said is not as is most generally believed by patent appU ances but by a sImple devIce of building an arch of brIck over the entire length of the fire The arch should be heated he said to the point of incandescence This will prevent the formation of hYdro causing the black smoke does so much damage to buildings and everything with which It cornea comes in con tact The hydrocarbons he poInted out are formed by the liberation of the coal gas coming in contact with tile the cold at atmosphere Mr Sturgis said no smoke in the chemIcal meaning or of the word would result if the plan outlined were tol fol lowed He cited several instances of buildings using his idea one of which was the UnIversity club of this city In opening his lecture Mr Sturgis gave a history of the National lion tion of Stationary Engineers ThIs body js Is purely In its purpose he said It has no affilIation of any kind whatever with labor unions The lecture was under the auspices of Utah branch ice i of the association Mr Sturgis is the inspector of boilers for the Hartford Boiler BoUer Insurance company wIth which company he has been associated for tor more I than twenty years ears I |
