not materialize the fight had all been made behind the closed doors of the council rooms and with the exception of the presentation of a minority report by a member of the from wisconsin to which 30 particular attention was paid there was no evidence that there had ever been a disagreement and the platform was adopted with less than halt half a dozen dissenting volts friday gave promise of being it a red letter day for the audience and the fight for the coveted bits of beautifully engraved cardboard waxed hot and heavy at nine thirty in tile the morning when the session opened every seat was tilled filled every aisle was jammed with avith fin an expectant multitude it was to be a day of oratory and it was the first order of business was the call of the states for the naming ot of fought back and the audience and the delegates fought with him from that time to the close of the ion long seven hours and more of nominating speeches the orators might quite as well hae said nothing as tile the aud audience lence heard nothing of what they said despite the efforts ot of chairman lodge the commotion continued until the lite last bottor had named the last of of the cle eleven n cand 41 lates ates whose names were placed before the connection conNen con antion tion A feature of the nominating and seconding speeches was introduced by mrs robinson of new york a sister of the late theodore roosevelt loosevelt Koo sevelt in seconding the nomination of general wood sho she referred ref ernd to him as a friend of her brother and from that time thue on practically each candidate was referred to as a friend and beir of the departed ex cx president the balloting began on friday night nigh and four ballots were taken at that time on these ballots general wood war wo the leader with governor lov london den a fairly close second after the first ballot a motion to adjourn was made but was promptly voted down by a combination of the wood and lowden delegates who nho felt that their only chance to win lay in preventing further conferences of tile alio party leaders another effort to adjourn was made after tile the second ballot and a roll call of the states demanded it too was voted down by the same combination of delegates at the close of 0 the fourth ballot senator swoot smoot advanced to the front of the speakers stand and moved an adjournment A roll call was again demanded but the demand was ignored and an aye and no vote called for rioth both sides lit in the lie contro hersl vers excited all their lung power lu in an effort to enforce their saturday morning hut but threats promises and appeals in the interests AS of party harmony were all in vain the three candidates wood lowden and johnson who were leaders in the voting refused to give place to any one on whom the senatorial leaders could agree they wanted to let the delegates tight fight it tut ut on the floor of 0 the convention ani continue the balloting until the delegates h hai ail expressed their choice tor for the first place on the ticket without tiny any influence being exerted on the part of th party leaders and temporarily won when the first ballot was taken at the session of saturday morning it showed but little change from those of friday night through the first four ballots of saturday general wood and governor lowden were running neck and neck and on one ballot were tied lied with votes each again there came a demand for adjournment journ ment and again the wood nood larv aw lowden forces combined to prevent it but without result after another another consultation at the back of th speakers stand between half a dozen senatorial leaders the session was adjourned despite the protests of a large part of the delegates almost instantly there flashed through the great building the rumor that the leaders had decided on sen ator harding arding II as the man it if they could cou d force his nomination and they were going to try could they do it dill did the leaders control enough delegates to name the 16 leader ader of the party ticket the general verdict was that they could that the unrestricted delegates would do their bidding senator johnson and general wood d refused to release their instructed delegates and on the ninth ballot the illinois delegation stayed with governor lowden the pennsylvania delegation stayed with governor sproul and the new york delegation continued to split among several candidates di dates at the end of that ballot senator harding arding II lacked votes of enough to nominate him and it was thought for a time the leaders were going to fall fail until governor sproul was known to have released the penn ienn sylvania delegation to harding arding II and with that the effort to climb into the harding wagon started on the tenth and final ballot in the ent end all in strutted ted delegations were released but many of them Pec declined lined to change ahelf last registered vote and the final ba lot was announced as given at the th head of this account all through the balloting 24 wisconsin delegates hao had persistently registered their votes for senator lafollette LaFo Ilette and when afeei the last ballot had been announced it was moved to make the nomination unanimous these 21 24 delegates voted against the motion it took but a short time to select governor Ilar dings running mate governor coolidge senator lenroot ot of wisconsin senator gronna of north dakota governor allen alien of kansas and colonel anderson of richmond va were named as candidates for tho place there was but one ballot governor coolidge receiving votes and the ticket was complete the republican convention of 1020 1920 was a thing of the past one of the features for which the convention just closed will long iong be re was the participation of tho women it Is doubtful it if they had any decisive part in the actual naming of the candidate other than the few who were present as delegates cut but women figured prominently on tile the minor committees and they figured prominently in the oratorical efforts and very much to their credit at least one woman seconded the nom of each of the candidates foi the nomination for the presidency and their speeches lip appealed pealed to the audience because they were short and to the point women were active as 82 workers around the headquarters headquarter S ot of every candidate they gave out red blue and gheen aken feathers for general wood badges and pennants for governor lowden served tea and cakes for herbert hoover and did something of a like service for each of tile the candidates at general woods headquarters 4 sirs mrs wood and her daughter had a handshake and a gracious word for every caller but they refused at all times to talk politics on the other liand hand the daughter of nicholas murray cutler butler was the real manager t f her fathers campaign herbert hoover at no time showed any astren strength ali in the ilia balloting for I 1 alio I 1 first nine ballots ills his total vote was wa front from tour four to six and on tile the tenth ballot he polled nine votes when ills his t name was presented to the convention on friday by judge miller of 0 syracuse new york a delegate front from that state lie he received a demonstration from tile the audience that was one ot of tile tho marked and unusual features of tho convention but it was not joined in by any of the delegations it was very evident that hoover had no placa lu in republican politics witt with some difficulty chairman lodge whose voice was gone managed to hold bold the delegates together long enough to pass the usual resolutions of thanks to the officials ot 0 the th convention and to trib city of chicago Cb cago and then tile the republican colvit of 1020 came to tin an end the mina 9 c ment of the convention hall ready deserved thanks for th lit sp alln the policing and other arrangements jere er the best ever seen in
