convention in session In tn Inthis this city at this time that has a very deep deeD interest for all aU who vho have nave the in intellectual Intellectual and social welfare of the commonwealth at t heart This Is the seventh annual convention of the Utah Federation of clubs and rare ly b has there been in this city a gather ing ins of brainier or more inore more progressive women wo men It is gratifying grat Ying to note the wide wida interest that is taken in this conven Jo tion ton Many of o th the e cities and towns to are s well represented while a number of ot prominent club wom women n from eastern cities are present to take part In the and to get pointers from the active workers here The first session of the convention was a called to order in the First Con church at 18 10 yester day morning with Mrs Mary Coulter the president of the federation in the chair There were enta tives tive present from all aU the principal clubs of this city Ogden Provo Brig ham City Orangeville Vernon and Manti The platform of the church W wa w a neatly neato decorated with vases of chrysan cosmos and flowering plant and palms Mrs Coulter of Ogden the president called the meeting to ordez and called upon the Rev Clarence T Brown for an invocation of divine bless ing InS and thus this important convention was VIas opened Mrs Coulter then introduced Mrs Eliza R B Royle Boyle one of the oldest club clubb women of the city and an honorary vice president of the General federa hedera tion Mrs AIrs Royle Roye was greeted with applause an 2 1 1 her address of welcome was li list t tn nr t oldest resi rest dents of Salt Lake I am ant In one ODe among the first club women of the city being a charter member of the oldest club If Jf I have not the red crown of f glory I have hae at least the dignity of years resting upon my head and thus be tw because cause I possess these advantage which many of you do notI DotI have hae been n given the great honor of ot extending to you the welcome of our clubs club I congratulate you club women that you live today toda This surely is the dawn of a great period in the history of the world Power and anti Influence The club oC of the United t States has almost had its birth and growth in the tile last quarter of a a cen century century f tury and yet mark what progress program has been made in the power and influence of the thousands of clubs to day The club is no longer regarded re regarded regarded as a frothy froth vagary an idle fad the subject of the foolish jest of the ignorant but it is an established fact it is is here to stay And when w we e re regard regard regard gard the success of these dubs cluBs have hae I we not a right to believe that the club will keep pace with the I mighty march of progress in the new century How our hearts thrilled with de light when hen we read of the prompt and splendid action of the women of the Federated clubs of California to pro protect protect teet their famous big biS trees of the Calaveras forest Like lightning from froma a clear sky came caIne the news to the California women that this great tract of over 2300 acres had been leased Ie sed to toa toa i a lumber dealer for the beggerly sum I of The These splendid dub club women act acted 4 with such vigor igor and ability that the politicians of Washington were aston A joint resolution was drafted dra ted by a member of congress for far the pur purchase purchase chase by the government of the r red redwood wood trees and this bill passed in the th senate and house and was signed by the president in in just fifteen days after the first telegram tel gram was vas sent from California Cali fornia to two to prominent club women n who were ere in m Washington lashington and who lob bied bled this bill Sixth its constitution and bylaws are so clear as a not to admit of doubt doubt Seventh cear ceara its iL policy is sufficiently elastic to expand expand with human progress Now your president resl ent cannot but feel that this federation would woul take on an increased usefulness and dignity digit if financial independence were establish established ed and the constitution so framed as to put it i beyond be ond misconstruction or doubt As a federation we e cannot doubt a ex cx expect expect to move moe forward to take a broader stand to reach out out to do altruistic work on an impecunious not being heard beard from In reply to the first question Are you In favor of the reorganization of the G F W V C which will wl give the clubs their representation in that body hody through their state federation only the committee reported but two tO nega negative tive votes and these th se were from which are not members of the general federation showing that tat Utah Uth Is over overwhelmingly overwhelmingly overwhelmingly in favor of representation in the general generl federation through the state federation Per er Capita Capit The votes on the adjustment of rep Tep bylaws bylaw of the tle general general federation and the method of choosing the rest with the state The question queston of dues was decided by an al almost almost almost most unanimous vote in
