Show L AN ACToRS ART OF MAKEUP UP To the Theatre Magazine J 3 E Dodson the successful character ac actor actor actor tor reveals the secrets of his hI makeup for Sir John Cotswold in The Th House Next Door Says the actor There are not hard fast rules togo to toBO togo go BO by in making up The Tho actor has to adapt his Is makeup to different parts and he liEs has h s to take into account his own individuality First I mold the nose out of nose putty that is in a s part that hat demands it For this part the nose adds a great deal of at character Although Sir John is an aristocrat I do n t make an essentially aristocratic nose because the conventional thin aquiline Is only one element In the makeup of the aristocrat and there is so much com corn comedy comedy edy so much strength and so much pathos patho in a role of this kind that a It amere mere thin aquiline nose would hamper rather than aid in the makeup A rigid hard aristocratic nose would give a set and unlikely appearance and in La contrast with the other facial charac characteristics characteristics of Sir John Johns it would be a blemish rather than a mark of charac character ter While Mr Dodson was talking he had taken a piece of nose putty about the size of ot a cherry and had flat flattened I toned it out into a sort of flapjack about i an inch and a half to two Inches in diameter Then he took a mall email pair of scissors and cut out two triangular pieces about a third of the way In toward the center Next ie e moistened the end and the lower part art of o his own ose with a little water on his fingers and put on some powdered mucilage The circular clr ular flapjack minus the two tri trl triangular tn angular pieces was then slapped onto ont his nose In the meantime Zip had been cooking some yellow and some some pink grease paint Now I paint my nose which is graft gratt grafted ed with Sir Johns with this melted ine ted color using a ca brush brus As the th ech character I am making up for tor Is an a aged gd ed than man of an irritable disposition it 1 l presupposed d that he is bilious eo so I Iu use ue u e this pink and yellow grease gr as paint td give a sallow appearance and In hi or order order orden der den to get Into the general tone of ot the them makeup m keup for tor this part Having done this I adjust the nose lose and then cover the entire face with cold cream so as to prevent the skin from becoming inn irritated IrrItated and in ill order to give a smooth foundation for the grease paint Next I put on the foundation of ot flesh colored grease paint all aU over the face tace which afterward has to be colored according to the nature of the part For this part being as I said a bilious old man I then put on a dull yellow over the foundation foundation foundation tion which gives a s tint Now Nowa a little rouge I next mold the nose using the tips Ups of ot my fingers and doing much the same as does the sculptor working in clay clayThis clayThis clayThis This done I put in the high tights lights preparatory to lining By lining Is meant denoting the shadows and wrinkles that give age and character to the makeup For the high lights I take the camels hair brush using yel yellow yellow yellow low grease paint for this particular makeup In order to make It sallow bilious and give age to the face I put In the lights under the eyebrows and at the sides of the nose and on the fronts of the cheeks Also I put on the crows feet teet using the same yellow Having done this I put on a yellowIsh powder which dries it all out flut |
