Show NOT RESPONSIBLE fOR THE SELECTION President Taft Writes Letter Concerning Appointment of Wade H Ellis RELUCTANT TO LOSE HIM HAS NO DESIRE TO INTERFERE IN OHIO POLITICS Cleveland 0 O March 3 In a letter to toH toH toH H D Davis United States marshal here President Taft denied any responsibility for the recent election of former Assist Assistant Assistant Assistant ant to the Attorney General Wade H El Ellis Ellis lis liz as chairman of the Ohio Republican executive committee The Tho letter received d today follows My Dear Mr Davis DavisI I have your let letter letter letter ter of February 26 in which you refer to criticisms of me for Interfering In Ohio politics by suggesting the selection of Wade Vade H Ellis Ems as chairman of the Re Republican Republican Republican publican executive committee of Ohio Taft Not Responsible I am glad to have the opportunity of assuring you that I am not in the slight slightest est degree responsible for the selection of Wade Wado H Ellis Ems as chairman of the Re Republican Republican Republican publican executive committee of Ohio The national committeeman Mr Vorys and arid the head of the committee Mr Brown and Williams who was chairman of the executive committee came to Washington and after what I assumed was a canvass of the state ro ra ratified me that for the general good of the party I should release Wade Vade H Ellis Ems from his position In the department of Justice where he ho has been doing excellent work and allow him to leave the government service in order to succeed Mr Williams as head of ot the executive committee Reluctant to Let Him Go Most reluctantly did I do this and I Idid Idid Idid did It also with the express understand understanding ing that I did not desire to Interfere with local politics in Ohio that I had no choice for governor and that though Mr Ellis Ems might succeed to the chairmanship he would not while there represent me or act upon my suggestions What I am most anxious about is that the tho Republicans of Ohio shall have full fulland fulland fulland and free expression with respect to the platform that they shall adopt and also as to the candidates to be selected I 1 do not think that there is now in the state any influence of an organized char character character character acter that would seek to prevent such a full and free expression of the Republicans Republicans Republicans Certainly I shall neither have the power nor the Inclination myself to exert any Influence of this kind Sincerely yours WILLIAM H TAFT |
