Show BY W D P RISHEL Independent ball stems seems s ems to be the only salvation for the national game In Utah this year One may mB talk league baseball until the cows come home horne but the fact remains the chances for thi this kind are mighty slim the coming season There is ii no argument in favor of independent ball as against league ball but it is a case ease of take what you ou can get g t and be mighty glad of or it with Utah fans a na It H makes one tired to hear th the remarks made around the streets and In the haunts frequented by baseball fans fan about the national game in Salt Lake This must mu t be a pretty prett poor baseball town if it it cannot support a league team This is as far tar as the tho argument goes as one who knows and under understands understands understands stands local conditions generally turns away In disgust Until Salt Lake can find some other ther fallows willing to go into a league with it there will be nothing but independent baseball and that is the exact condition here today It does seem however as if a state league should be made to pay its way wa but where are three towns in this state which will put professional teams In the field to compete with Salt Lake Ogden wont do doIt doIt dolt It lt Eureka says no and Park City has had enough Murray and Bingham could not possibly offer enough in gate receipts to warrant a team playing a series serie of games at either place Provo one of the largest towns in the state is mighty shy on baseball patrons and while Logan is much better like Pro Provo Provo Provo vo it will not stand for Sunday ball The other smaller towns tons are out of the question If angels could be found in three cities outside of ot Salt Lake they could not offer crowds large enough to warrant Salt Lake putting In a pro professional professional team It seems therefore that the independent ball is the only thing Then the teams will have to hustle the best they the can and put up guarantees to get teams tooms to play with One thing should be done to insure a success of independent ball The managers of the various teams must sign an agreement not to monkey with each others otherl players Players should be signed as in league ball and these contracts must be respected A forfeit should also be put up by the teams before th the they y schedule games with each other This forfeit should stand to compel the teams to play the games as agreed agTe d upon UDon Should a team leave leav the field because e It did not like the decision of the umpire or should a a team fall fail to be on hand at the scheduled time for starting a game the money posted should be handed over to the team not at fault by the stakeholder This will give the games a semblance of league ball and will engender confidence In the games in the general public publicS S EASTERN SEASON OPENS THURSDAY They will be off in the big leagues next Thursday The sixteen teams In Inthe inthe Inthe the two major organizations have their scheduled games for the opening of the season on this date In Salt Lake while we may not be able to witness the real article we can at least lea t know we reside in America by reading an account each morning of what they are doing In hi other more favored communities communities communities The outlook for the two major leagues looks brighter this year than ever and in all probability larger crows crowds will patronize the games g mes Here In Salt Lake the work of the New York Americans will be watched with Interest as Roy Castleton from all appearances vill will be one on of the twirlers Willie Hogg hogs another twirler well known In Salt Lake is one of the Yankees pitch pitchIng pitchIng pitching Ing staff The minor leagues line up this season about the same as usual The American association Eastern league and Southern league three of the strongest minors are well organized and should go through without a hitch The Pacific coast has ha dropped down to four towns but all are strong and while the competition Is not as It should be there is but little doubt that all will make money The Western Ve tern league shaky at Its best Is none too strong again this year At this writing the question of whether the Western league will be allowed to take Topeka from tho the Western association has not been settled and without Topeka the Western league leigue must drop back to the weak circuit of ot last year This circuit will be lucky to finish the sea season season season son The Northwest league made up of towns formerly associated with Salt Lake is the weakest sister of the lot and how it can finish the season Is a mystery From the first week this league will begin to lose money and lose it in large gobs It Is a question therefore of how long and how deep the angels will dig when considering the life of oC the league BOUT A GOOD ONE The report comes from Ogden that the proposed match between Schoel of Cheyenne and Kid Herrick of Ogden has been called coiled off This should have been a good bout and would without doubt have drawn a large crowd er wd from Salt Lake If l the match had hart been properly handled and by the right kind of people This Cheyenne kid is certainly a corner comer and the Inhabitants Inhabitants Inhabitants of Wyoming will back him to the limit There Is a youngster hereabouts however who should give Schoel a good fight and It Is believed he would gladly accept an opportunity to get the match It is none other than Young Youn Watson Vatson of Pocatello Watson has challenged Schoel frequently and not later than two months ago left a forfeit of in the writers hands for a month to bind a match with the Cheyenne youngster youn ter The Ogden promoters should get busy bUlY and sign up this pair of ot youngsters if it possible and the match should prove DrOye one of the best cards ever pulled off in the Junction City BILL HAUSEN WINS OUT AT MONTGOMERY Manager of oC Montgomery Ala believes it Is not necessary for Mill Hausen Hansen to do any spring training as he Is always In shape shaDe Malarky has the old Ogden warhorse sized up Just about right Hausen will still be playing ball when some of ot tho the present youngsters are out of oC the game for tor good And he will always be reliable and can always be depended upon DOn to play the ball from the start to finish This reminds the writer of or the time Dad Gimlin fined Hausen for Cor loafing It happened three years ago when Gimlin was manager of the Salt Lake team Bill Dill did not sewn seem to get down to first base as fast as Gimlin thought he be should and pad Dad promptly fined him five saying It was wa for loafing This nearly broke Hausen Hansens 8 heart He III never got over the fine al although a though Gimlin remitted it it after the game Fine me for loafing exclaimed Bill everybody knows I never loafed In a ball game In my life l fe Hausen would ld not have kicked If it the fine had been for anything else in the world but wo the fact that he had been accused of ot loafing hurt him more mere than if It his salary had been beCa be n stopped in the middle of oC the season LITTLE BOOSTING FOR TONOPAH FIGHT The Th effort of oC Mike ike Riley of ot Tonopah to make his hin hi coming corning fight one of ot na no national n notional importance does not seem to be meeting with much success Instead of oC boosting the fight the coast sporting writers are all out with their ham and ridicule the bout as a 8 affair atair mers Riley has ha h a 8 well organized press bureau which is flooding the country with dope done on the fighters It is also noticeable that the better class of oC sporting writers are just as fl busily engaged in consigning this matter to the waste wastebasket basket banket b banketS ke S t |
