PAY TRIBUTE TO DEPARTED ELKS Members of loc Local t I Lodge Hold H ld Impressive Service in Salt Lake Theatre ADDRESS BY RABBI FREUND BROTHERHOOD OF MAN IS TAK TAKING TAKI TAKING ING ON REALITY i S With the solemn and impressive rit nt ritualistic services of the order the th mem members members bers bern of Salt Lake lodge No 85 Benevolent Benevolent Benevolent lent and Protective Order of Elks paid tribute to the memory of the dead members of the local lodge at the Salt Lake theatre last night The theater was crowded with the friends of the members of the order and among them were many members of the families q of the departed The services were marked throughout by simplicity and earnestness and closest attention was paid during the entire service The Th stage was decorated with a station and conducting the exercises was Thomas Homer and on either side were ranged seats for the theother theother theother other officers of the lodge participating in the exercises These were chaplain lain Calls Roll of Dead DurIng the ritualistic service serIce the roll rollof rollot rollof of ot the dead was called by the secretary secreta after which the members of the order throughout the house arose at the sound of the gavel gayel and gave the sign of ot sorrow orrow Chaplain Luce offered an impressive invocation A mixed quartet consisting of Mrs Bessie Bessle Browning Miss Agatha Berk Berkhoel Berkhoel hoel hod C F Graham and W G C Squires sang Teach each Me 0 O Lord by b Case Mrs Irs Browning sang 0 O Divine Redeemer by Gounod after which the eulogy was delivered by James C Leary past ex cx exalted exalted alted ruler of ot the lodge The eulogy treated of the uncertainty of life and the duty that man owes to man during life and pleading for a broader feeling of or fraternalism and brotherly love among men C Fred Graham sang The Road to Light by Walpole and the tho orchestra rendered Sullivans Lost Chord Brotherhood of Man Rabbi C J 1 Freund delivered the an annual annual annual nual memorial address in which he said that the world has ever e had its dreamers its visionaries men m who wio sing the songs gongs of f hope for th the future andi and the songs of an art era of ot greater at r accomplishment com andt and better feeling among men Men are living at peace with one an another another another other he said sal and nations are re laying aside their armament and the brother brotherhood brotherhood hood of r man mania is more of a reality re now than it has over before been It is no ito longer the dream of the dreamer the hope of the visionary He said the attainments of the pres present present present ent state of civilization are ar not the re ne results suits of a moment but have hOo been gained by the gradual steps step of men and the gradual advancement from a lower aloer to a higher plane of thought and action Primarily man was w s selfish s said the speaker and the continuance of ot his own existence was the first and
