Show Sexator Sherman of Ohio has writ- , ten a letter in regard to the presidential presiden-tial nomination, starting out with the statement that the election of a dem-cratic dem-cratic president means a restoration to full power in the government of the worst elements of the rebel confederacy, con-federacy, a result which he predicts would be tho signal for the rule of violence and fraud, and the virtual recitablishment of African slavery. He says in regard to the candidate of the republican party, that public pub-lic opinion has positively closed the question of the third term, and that it would be criminal folly to disregard it. He does not believe that Grant ever seriously entertained the thought of a third term, but if he did, the established usage against it would make his nomination an act of political polit-ical suicide. It would disrupt the party iu every republican state. The senator then procecdsto recommend J the nomination of Governor Hayes of Ohio for the presidency, and urges that the united delegation of Ohio Bhould be instructed to support him in the national convention. It now remains to be seen whether Grant is Btronger than the republican party-leaders party-leaders who have entered the hits against him. |
