The democrats celebrated their victory to-night with a salute of cannon, a grand torchlight torch-light procession, bonfires and a fine display of fireworks. Mr. Williams, governor-elect, who arrived this afternoon, after-noon, was escorted from his hotel to night to the slate house sijuaro by the Williams guards and other companies, com-panies, bearing torches. Speeches were mado by Williams, Covernor Hendricks, and others. WILLIAMS SAID : My Fellow Citizens I neither sought, desired nor expected the nomination for tho ollico to which I have been elected. It was the Irco-will Irco-will offering of tho greaU party which I appreciate m tho highest degree. The peoplo have approved and endorsed en-dorsed that nomination by my election. elec-tion. I feel thankful to them for it, ! and will labor to mako them the only return in my power, tho only return which they will accept a hiithful discharge of tbo duties ol the office. 1 have had long and important import-ant connection with the legislative department of the statu, and it is gratifying to mo to know that in tho tierce politic il contest through which we have passed, and in which Bcarco anything has escaped examination, examina-tion, no fault has been found with me, not even a criticism criti-cism of my legislative record. After tho close of that legislative service- it is very gratifying to me to receive from the bauds of tho people peo-ple the highest elective office of the state. While I experience tho high est appreciation ot the honor which has been done mo, and I would not l utter ono word or sentiment in n i spirit of exultation, my lull under- ; standing of the responsibilities of this t occasion mako it improper for me to I make such a speech.
