Show T i 1 (1 ii ' h I" x p 1 it mi I i o n of His Ihcuuio i'nx ISuNiiiesfi. Now York, 21, Tho letter issued by Abram S. Hewitt, chairman of tho national democratic committee, addressee! to th public, concerning tho New York Tunes' charges against Tilden, recites that the 77 we., which formerly was a warm friend of Tilden's, has made serious assaults of late ou his character, which, assaults culminated in the charge of perjury, reiterated with specifications and do tails so often as to disturb some persons per-sons and to cause tha writer to apply io the treasury for certified copies of the income, returns of Tilden and tiayes; that theso copies havo not been received, nor has his letter been noticed, though Tilden's ad vera tries i havo had full access to thevc returns, and have photographed them; that , he therefore wrote Judge Sinnot, Til-; Til-; lien's confidential law clerk during tho whole period in dispute, asking him to examine the pretended account ac-count of Tilden's income- in 1S02, published by tho Timts, and to furnish fur-nish him (Hewitt) his explanations thereof; that this reply had been rs-ceived, rs-ceived, and presented a satisfactory refutation of the Times' charges; that tlio answer shows that out of thirteen pretended items of incomo, amount-ting amount-ting to $110,000, eleven items, equaling equal-ing $S4,000, uro wholly fictitious, while of tho other two only one of $1 ,000 is entirely .truo and the" "second ot $25,000 is only partially true. Therefore no ground ; for tho assertion. Mr. Sinnot's statement, to which Hewitt alludes, after remarking that he (Sinnot) is perfectly familiar with the whole a flair, and with Tilden's business, declares the Times statement false in every particular and evidently iniciuUd lo mislead. For example, tho first item roads February 19, tee lor trustee and m ister commissioner's commis-sioner's deed, etc.; hut the wording of the second item is mad a different, and reads, LYbruary 2o, toes and expenses ex-penses with rsference to deed, etc.; and the third item is put in still another and different mo le of expres sion thus, M.rch 1, for drafting, etc., first mortgage deed, while in the fourth item the word "fees" and this time without expenses is brought into requisition. Tho obvious intent of these contrivances is to color to these bogus items and an appearance of being copied from the real paper. Concerning Tilden's connection with the rittfburg and Fort Way no road, Sinnot declares that the firt six items of the Times statement are about accounts ac-counts which never existed, and Tiidcn never made any specific charge of them against any individual or corporation. cor-poration. Tilden became counsel for the bondholders of that road in 1S59 and worked assiduously til! ISO'2. |
