TUo MosscntM Arrt'sit'd on Ilic (Miargp of Having a Finger in the IMo- Preliminary Examination in I lie Justire's Court. Tho Well, Fargo & Co. fxpu-sa robbery on Thursday ovrning w is thu chief topic of convocation in tho ciiy yesterday. It is a matter of fact that when any deed of tho kind ia coin- , mi tie.) the finger of eus-pu'ion is quick to point in the directiun of those who may have had something lo do with it. In this case the first impression of nianv ntnnln nltrr Innumi r)w ui ia.ij tjvutjiu, uivim uu.uiiK nit circumstances uf tho robbery, was that the express mojsL'ngcr, W. G. Williams, was a crimiualiy interested party iu tho transaction. Il seems that Mr. J. E. Dooley, tho .ig.-nt ot W-, F. & Co., in this city, was also quick to doubt thu modeug r's story; for it appears that in a convent. ilir.u with Williams, immediately alter the arrival at tho office of the latter, Mr. Daoley intimated that his olurv was "too thin." Lato ou Tliur.iduy night the agtmt, with City M-ih il , Burt and others, went to the depot and examined lh oxpresd ear, ami j wero convinced from what they a.i-.v, or failure to bco what they anticipated, antici-pated, that Williams was at least in collusion with thu robbers. Hmce, betweon 1 and 2 o'clock yesterday yester-day morning the messenger was arrested on the complaint of Mr. Dootey and taknn to the city jail, where he now re mains. Tho preliminary examination examina-tion of tho charge was euuimenced yesterday afternoon be lore Justice Raleigh. The prosecution was con ducted by Mr. Marshall, , F & Go. 's attorney, and Judges Suow and Sutherland. The prisoner's attorneys are Judges Til ford and Morgan and Mr. Lewis. A number nf witnesses were examined, amoug whom wen; Mr. Djolcy, Mi. Warren, wlio drives the express wagon frcm the dpot to the office; Mr. Jacobs, pasaenjr conductor con-ductor on the U. C. R. R.; Mr. Unit. I the engineer who brought down Iho train Thursday night, Marsh.il Burl and others. Tho prosecution hu.1 not closed when an adjournment was taken tak-en till 11 o'clock this morning. U appeared ap-peared from tho evidence that everything every-thing in the express car was all tight until the train left Woods Cross, eight miles from the city. About half a mile Ibis side of Woods Cross, tlm tr.iin stopped to let a lady and a couple of children get ofl. Iu a statement of the case to Mr. Dooley, the mc-senger said that immediately the train started start-ed after the woman was letdown, too front door of tho car was forced open and two masked men eulered-on their hacds and knees, with drawn pistols, telling him to hold up his hand and keep qu;et, when they would not hurt him. He did at directed, when he was gagged and tied to the car, us Btated in yesterday's Heeald, when the robbers took his keys, opened the treasure safe, took the money and jumped oft" the train near the Hot springs. There is a discrepancy in Williams' statement in regard t-j the keys. At one time he told Mr. D. that he gave the keys to the robl- rs, and in another conversation s.ii.1 the keys were taken from his pocket after he was tied. " The evidence of the train men waj to the efluet that they saw no one get on the train cither at Woods Cross or at the point where the woman got off", and from the l itter point until the train slowed before entering the city, it ran at a speed of about 23 miles an hour, and it would have been dangerous if not fatal for any one to have jumped ofi the train, between the 'points or stopping. The distance between the Hot springs and the place where the woman left the train is about four and a halt miles, which twas run in about S minutes, in which time the giigging, tying and robbing must have been accomplished. Mr. Dooley and other gentlemen examined the car door, and found no evidencs of its having been forced open, or the lock tampered with. They also exerted themselves to force tho door but were unable to do so. The letters and packages found in the car, had been opened nicely, and after tho valuable contents had been extracted Borne of tho envelopes had been laid away with care in a desk indicating that the robbers had been in no great hurry with their work. The above is the substance of the testimony introduced yesterday, the evident leading theory of the prose cution being that, according to William's Wil-liam's account of the occurrence, sufficient time could not have elapsed between the forcing of the car door by the robbers and their leaving of tho train, in which to have accomplished accom-plished so much. Some Indiana rode on the tender immediately in front of tho express car, from Ogden to Salt Lake, and wo understand they assert that they saw no one euter tho door, as stated by the messenger. Tho Indians will be placed on the stand to-day. The defendant has Eomo witnesses which are also to testify this afternoon. after-noon. Officers have been at work-diligently since Thursday evening, but have succeeded in tracing the robbery to uo one. A carriage containing two or three men was seen near the Hot Springs about the time the train passed, coming towards thu city at a rapid Bpeed; and about 10 o'clock that nifiht a light vehicle containing men went over Jordan. These, however, how-ever, are trifling circumstances which would not occasion a moment's thought at another time. Mr. Williams has been the messenger mes-senger ou the road for a year past, and during that time nothing has occurred which would lead the company com-pany to have doubts of his honesty. He has attended to his business efficiently, ef-ficiently, and heretofore no loss has occurred through him, though large mniw of money urr utmost daily ontnutrd to his e..re as nua.i. ngi'r Tho aliiu ULeu li TliiiiMl.ty night wot. $"),() I) iiKJii; than tin- amount Usually brought at a time.
