Show j South Jordan School District. I Silt Lake City, December 1, 1S7G. Vilitort Herald: - I take the liberty of asking a place in your columns to say a word or two on the growing question of Utah the school question. Tho district I live in iB known on tho county superintendent's sup-erintendent's record as district No. 35; its location is South Jordan precinct, pre-cinct, Salt Lake county. For the past two years some efforts were made to "run" the school matters mat-ters by taxation and tuition combined, but with not very encouraging success. suc-cess. Just before that time the citizens citi-zens had, by voluntary donation, erected a fine schoolhouae, about 40 1 feet x 30, with basement; the citizena aro willing now to vote the house to the care of the trustees, and to keep i the enterprising spirit alive which 1 has seemed to grow quickly upon the people since the successful comple- tion of the canal, by the couuty court, through their settlement. Last November a meeting of the taxpayers of that district was called . to take into consideration tbe matter mat-ter of running the school exclusively by taxation. Th new law was read, and with the experience of the ' benefit accruing from their feeb'.e uflorts at paying expenses by taxation, the vote was unanimous that the trustees be empowered to levy and Assess taxes for the next two years and "run" their school with the proceeds pro-ceeds thereof. The expenses were taken into consideration, and the amount of 2 per cent, was unanimously unani-mously voted to be assessed and paid. The trustees believe that the amount will be sufficient to pay teacher's salary, sal-ary, provide fuel, books, papers, maps, etc., for ten mouths in the year. Tho children of school age between be-tween 6 and 1G number about sixty; but we expect children from outside; our district to attend, and older "children" from our diitrict, also; these we shall charge tuition fees, and the prospect is that school matters there will keep up with the spirit of advancement and improvement the citizens of that preciuct enjoy and demonstrate. One of the Trustees. |
