Show Ope ii in (he Political Bnll. Washington, 13. Ttie republican ualional committee met to-day at the Arlington house. Ex-Gov. Morgan of New York called tho meeting to order and said their duties were confined con-fined to fixing the lime and place for the republican national convention lo nominate candidates for president and vice-president. Fifteen ol the original members of the committee were present, and thirteen gentlmen by proxy. The committee then heard one member from each state in reference refer-ence lo the location of the convention. Goncrui Garfield favored Ohio, aa one of the closest republican statce, and iej. forth the advantages of Cleveland. Governor Xoyes suggested Cincinnati. Mr. Medil! advocated the claims ol Chicago, and said the great exposition building of that city was capable of 1 holding 20,000 to 35,000 in addition to the convention. Several other cities were suggested and an informal vote reatiltfcd as follows: Cincinnati 15, Chicago 5, Philadelphia i, Cleveland 4, Saratog i Springs 2, Boston 1; 2'cw I York 1, St. Louis 1, Washington. 1. i Three ballots were subsequently .taken, the lusl being as follows: 'Cincinnati, 20; rniladelphia, 16; j Chicago, 7. A'o choice, twenty two votes being necessary. An adjournment was then voted. 'Senators Howe and Morton and h'ssrs. William E. Gordon ol California, in urging the claims for the convention to he held at San Francisco, said that it was a central locality, Alaska being as far west from it as Castiuc, in Maine, was east. |
