Show The new Catholic cathedral which is now being built on Fifth avenue, New York city, will bo the most imposing im-posing church edifice yut underlnkeu in America. The present condition of the work, ub stated by the American Archied, is ns follows: All tho walls are completed, and tho slating and copper work of the roofs is nearly done. The battlements and pinnacles are finished, with the exception of thoHO upon the two transept fronts and over the Bide aisles. Tho towers and spires am incomplete, but with these- exceptions the whole exterior is nearly finished. Tho marble work or such parts ol the extcriwr as are necessary neces-sary for tho Bccurity of tho roof is now being cut namely, tho third stories of tho two western towers, and the pinnacles and ornaments ot tho three great gables. This work will bo completed com-pleted this winter, and will bo set during tho coming spring. The interior in-terior finish is already partly con-traded con-traded fur and it is hoped that the building will bcsullicieiitly completed for tho celebration of the church ier-vie. ier-vie. s in about two years. Tho lowers and spires will bo continued after the consecration of the cathedral. |
