Show tieucrHl Grant. London, 28. Gen. Grant arrived at Stratford-on-Avon to day, aud met with a brilliant reception. His visit whh made the occasion of a festival, in which tbe whule town too'x part. The etais and stripes were displayed from the town hall and the mayor'B residence. resi-dence. Members of the corporation received General and Mrs. Grant, woo were accompanied by Gen. Badeau, at the railway station, and escorted j Ihern to Shakoppeare's birthplace. Thence the party proceeded to the museum, the church, Anna Hatha way's cottage and other places of in- erest. lbe distinguished viditors ere subsequently entertained at a labile lunch in the town hall. A toast .o the health of Geueral Grant was proposed and drank with cheers, and' ne was presented with a very cordial address en closed in a casket made from the wood oi a mulberry tree planted by Snakespeare. The general, repUing to the toimt, spoke most heartily of the welcome given him. lie declared that it would have been impossible for him to leave England wi'hout visiting the birth-place aud home of Sbakecp .-are. He pointed to numerous American Shakespearean societies as proof ol the honor paid to the poet in the United 6t:ites. |
