When an attempt was made to take a ballot for a gubernatorial candidate, Holman, Landers, and Hi black being candidates, candi-dates, Landets demanded that bis name be withdrawn, refusing to be. a candidate together with Judge Holman. Hol-man. and much ccufu-iim ensued. Finally both the names were withdrawn, with-drawn, and Judge Williams c tiered ,as a compromise candidate. The first ballot stood: Holman, 010; Landers, Land-ers, 80S; Munson, 23; Williams, 2S. No choice, 9o0 being necessary to nominate. Finally all other candidates candi-dates were withdrawn, and Williams was declared the unanimous nominee of the convention. Isaac P. Gray i was nominated for lieutenant governor. gover-nor. The platform reaffirms adherence, to the constitution and a perpetual, union of the states, with local self-' government, declares in favored' the maintenance of free schools, eeonnni in governmtut, federal, itale and locai, deplores the financial distresses and public corruption, which are attributed at-tributed to the unwise government and legislation, the vicious financial policy of contraction, and the extravagance extra-vagance of the republican party, whose officials have so long Iven unchanged. un-changed. The exposures of corruption cor-ruption in the administration o! afiairs demonstrate that a thorough and general change is ihe only means of reform. It commends the etlorts of the majority of the house of repie sentativcs for reduction of expenses. The currency resolution was read. Fourth We believe in our ancient doctrine that gold and silver are the true and safe basis for the currency, and we are in favor of measures and policies that will produce uniformity in value in tho coin and paper money of the country, without destroying or embarrassing the business interests in-terests of the people. Fifth We oppose the contraction in volume ol our paper currency and are in favor of the adoption of meas- from circulation of national b.mk notes, and the substitution therefor ol circulating notea ksucd by authority of the government; decUre for an undivided school fund, appropriated only lor non - sectarian common schools; for a license law properly guarded. A. Hendricks, he is the unanimous unan-imous choice of Indiana for the presidency of the United Slate, anil that our delegates to the national convention are instructed to cast the vote of the states in the manner to be determined by the majority. In view of the great recuperative powers of our country, we believe a natural return to specie payments will be prompted by the increase ol national wealth ami industries, by the assurances of harmony at home and peace abroad, and by strengthening strengthen-ing our public credit under a wise and economical administration of our national allaira. Tho resolutions further favor tho legal tender note as safe, and demand the repeal ol legislation enacted by the republican party providing for its withdrawal from circulation, and the substitution of national bank paper. They denounce the resumption act as most parulyzing and harmful in its effects on the industries of the country, coun-try, ami demand its repeal; oppose the payment of any part of the rebel debt, the payment for emancipated slaves or proper'.y of rebels destroyed during the war. |
