A Salem, Oregon, Ore-gon, press dispatch says the following statement, by tiie democratic candi-1 dales for presidential electors, was published in lnet evening's Daily Mercury headed, "A True State meut:" Tu the IWwlc of Oreuon: Inasmuch as grossly false statements state-ments purporting to rolato what occurred at tho holding of the electoral elec-toral college to day, aro being indu-triouely indu-triouely circulated hy lho members of tho republican party, we, the uuder signed eubmit the following us a faithful detail of the proceedings in question in said electoral college, ' held in Salem on tho Oth day of December, 1S7G. At tho hour of 12 m. there were present in tha room designated as the one in which ' the electoral vote should ho cast the. lonowing persons. J. (J. (Jartwngut, 1 W. H. Udell, ,j. W. Watts, Henry i Khppel, W. a Caswell and E. A. Croimi. At said hour tho dcor ol the room in which the said electoral vote was to be chut was opcucd and the secretary of the state "handed to Mr. Cronin an envelope containing certificates certi-ficates in triplicate ol the election aa electors of E. A. Crjnin, J. U. Cart-wngnt Cart-wngnt and W. II. Udell After h indmg the certificates to Mr. Cronin tho seereliiry retired from the room. Immediately afterwards Mr. Cart-wright Cart-wright opened tho door and admitted one Mr. MinU, a police olhcer of the City of Salem and a deputy United States marshal. Mint, uon entering, enter-ing, closed the door, locked it and took tho key, whereupon Cronin requested him lo leave the room. Cartwright and Odell insisted at first upon Mint' remaining, but finally, upon the request of Cartwright, Mints retired, leaving the key iu tho door. Odell then locked the door and took the key, but upon thu request ol the democrats replaced the key in tho door.
